Abstract

271,256. O'Hanlon, F. T., and Pennington, A. June 14, 1926. Self-filling reservoir pens; caps.-The. nib-protecting cap of a sac self-filling fountain or stylographic pen is provided with a plunger or aircompressor by the actuation of which, when the cap is fitted on the rear end of the barrel, air and residue ink may be ejected from, and a fresh charge of ink drawn into, the sac. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a hollow plunger 6 is reciprocably mounted in the end of a cap-member 4, a spring ring 7 in the cap-member being adapted to engage a recess 9 in the plunger to prevent separation. Inward movement of the plunger is limited by a shoulder 10 in the member 4. An air-aperture 5 in the cap-member is adapted to be covered by the finger during compression of the air, and an air-aperture 2 is formed in the end of the barrel 1. The plunger may be adapted to screw into the end of the member 4 to prevent accidental operation. As shown in Fig. 3, a washer 13 provided with air-passages 14, is fitted in the end of the cap member and serves to prevent leakage when the cap is fitted on the nib end of the pen. The plunger 6 slides on the outside of the member 4 and is integral with a pocket-clip 11. The lower end of the plunger is adapted to snap over a split ring 7. In a modification of this form, the plunger may be under the influence of a spring tending to force it outwards, and retained in position by a spring ring thereon engaging a recess in the member 4 or by screwing. The washer 13 may be formed as a non-return valve, an air-aperture, closed by the finger during filling, being formed in the member 4. As shown in Fig. 6, the cap-member 4 is provided with a tube 18, and the plunger 6, which slides in an extension 20 of the member 4, is packed to form a tight joint with the tube. The outer end of the tube is closed and a lateral aperture 14 is formed therein. Withdrawal of the plunger forces air through the aperture 14, tube 18, and aperture 2 into the barrel. In a further modification shown in Fig. 7, a rubber teat is mounted in the extension 20 and is compressed by a lever 26 pivoted in the extension 20 and actuated bv the plunger 6.
