Abstract

<PICT:0624366/III/1> <PICT:0624366/III/2> In a ball-point device for applying liquid or paste, a flexible sac retains the liquid in the barrel between one face of the sac and the ball, the other face of the sac being subjected to sustained pressure. The sac 16 may be made of rubber or synthetic plastic material and, as shown, has its open end attached to a vented plug 17 and is unstressed in its distended condition, but is collapsed when the barrel 14 is charged with liquid. Atmospheric pressure acts upon the dry face of the sac through the vent 19. In a modification, the open end of the sac is connected to the point end of the barrel, and the sac when unstressed is collapsed and is distended when filled with liquid. Atmospheric pressure through a vent or spring-pressure is applied to the outside surface of the sac. The ball 15 is held in a race r with an annular space 281 beneath the ball to which the liquid passes through a port 29. Any excess liquid carried by the ball past the race r will accumulate in a groove 31 in the tip 10 and be carried back by the ball into the space 281. The device is filled by removing the tip 10, inserting a tube connected to a container and reaching to the bottom of the barrel, and connecting the vented end of the barrel to a vacuum pump. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the sac may be made of nylon. Further, a spring may be situated within the sac 16, Fig. 1, for applying pressure to the liquid. Also, the ball race r is a swage fit and extends preferably inwardly as well as outwardly from the ball centre. The base of the ball may bear against a bottoming pin or a back stop constituted by a disc or a transverse wall 26, as shown. This subject - matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
