[Class 146 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A reservoir pen or stylograph, in which a separate cartridge or ink container is provided, is characterised by the cartridge having an outside valve for controlling the flow of ink therefrom, A cartridge 8 is sealed by a flanged plug 9 which is bored and threaded centrally to receive a piston valve member 10 having a hollow stem 11 and head 12 outside the cartridge. A sleeve 14 is slidably mounted on the valve member 10, making a fluid tight job, and is normally urged by a compression spring 15 against the head 12, in which position (Fig. 1) it covers lateral communicating ports 13. The cartridge is inserted valve end first with the first part 1 of the pen casing, when the sleeve 14 abuts against a washer 6 on a shoulder 17. The rear part 5 is then screwed on; the final screwing causes the spring 15 to be compressed (Fig. 3) and the ports 13 are then exposed, allowing ink to flow from the cartridge to the nib holder 2, the spring 15 then being completely enclosed in the recess 18. The washer 6 may be coated with a non-adhesive synthetic resin to prevent adhesion to the sleeve 14 and may fit into a groove on the sleeve. A modification is described in which the body of the pen is in one piece and the operation of the valve is effected when the nib-holder is attached. Specification 577,096 is referred to.
