This invention relates to improvements in fountain pens and the like devices, and has for its object an improved construction of pen of the type in which a cap is employed for closing or covering the nib or stylus end of the pen when the same is not in use, although it may be applied to other types of fountain pens. v
Hitherto it has been customary to employ a filling device comprising a tubular memberprovidedat one end with a bulb of rubber or the like by thesuccessive compression and extension of which the air in the tube is expelled and ink drawn therein, said device beingused to fill the pen reservoir when the closing plug or screwed sleeve carrying the nib and feed, has been removed. W'ith pens requiring a filling device of this type it is very' often difficult to fill the pen when required owing to the filling device not being available.
The present invention has for its principal object an improved construction of pen and of the cap ordinarily used for protecting the nib or stylus which is shaped in such a manner as to serve asa receptacle for a filling appliance, the construction of which constitutes a novel feature of the invention. A further feature of the invention consists in the application of the improved cap to a pen of the type in which the nib holder is telescopically mounted within the pen barrel, said holder being retracted within the barrel by rotation. l/Vith this type of pen it is usual to close the end of the barrel by a plug which may be screwed therein. In applying the invention to pens of thistype, the plug or cap for closing the end of the pen barrel is extended to form a chamber for enclosing the filling device.
According to one form of the invention the outer end of the. protecting cap, is formed as a chamber for the reception of the filling appliance, the latter bein formed in one or more parts, preferably t ree, one
of which comprises a bulb of rubber or other suitable material, while the other two members comprise tubes or the like slidable one within the other, the outer tube being slidable within the neck of thebulb portion. The end of the chamber for the filling appliance is closed by a separate plug or cap or the outer closed end of the bulb may be formed with a flange or shoulder, and of greater thickness, which portion may or may not be vulcanized, the end of the bulb forming a close fit within the open end of the cap.
The container for; the filling appliance may also be-provideti with a springy clip adapted to irictionally hold the end of the inner member of the filling appliance, so that when the same is withdrawn from the container, the inner member is retained within the container, so that the action of withdrawing the filling device also causes the same to be extended to its maximum.

In order to fill the pen reservoir it is merely necessary to remove the filling appliance from the cap, the removal of the appliance automatically extending the parts thereof to their maximum length (where a telescopic filling device is employed) the appliance being used in the usual well known manner and afterwards returned to the container or chamber within the cap.
In order that the invention may be readily undeistood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in. which Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation through the nib or stylus end of the pen, with the cap in position thereon, together with the filling appliance for the ink reservoir,

In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the cap a is intended for use with pens of the type in which the holder 1s retractible within the body of the pen barrel.

The cap which is preferably cylindrical, is open at opposite ends to constitute two chambers d, 6, respectively. The bottom of the chamber d is closed bya plug portion f as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 servlng to close the open end 0 of the barrel 0, so that when the nib holder 6 is retracted within the barrel (Fig. 1) the end of the barrel will be effectively closed, so that leakage of ink from the barrel is prevented.- The bottom of the chamber e terminates'in a conical recess g for a purpose hereinafter described.
- 4 The open end of the. chamber d of the cap is preferably threaded at d to engage the externally threaded portion c of the barrel 0 of the pen, while when the pen is removed to that end of the pen body opposite to the nib holder the chamfered portion (5 of the cap serves to enable the cap to snugly fit the pen body in the usual manner, the threaded portion al being located a short distance within the chamber at for this purpose.
The open end of the chamber 6 of the cap a is provided with a closing plug it, the outer periphery of Which is knurled, milled or otherwise roughened, as shown to facilitate its removal. The closing plug is also preferably dished or hollowed out, as shown at if.
The filling appliance for the pen reservoir, shown separately at Figs. 4: and 5 comprises two tubular memberslc, Z, the part Z being slidable within the part It and preferably flared out or provided with a lip or prejecting flange Z engaging an inwardly turned lip on the end of the membe'r io to prevent the. same being entirely withdrawn from the part in. ()n the part Ir: is mounted a bulb m of rubber or other suitable resilient material within which the central tube is is slidably mounted, the part being flared out at its inner end as shown at 70 while the open end of the bulb is preferably secured, as by a ring or strap of wire a to the inner sleeve m the latter being preferably provided with an annular groove in its outer periphery into which the material of the bulb is pressed by the band 91, so that no wear takes place when the .parts are slidden one within the other. The inner surface 70 at one end of the member 7a is preferably slightly tapered to ensure rigidity while the outer surface of the inember k at the opposite end is also tapered as shown for a similar purpse.
When the filling appliance is in use the members is, Z, m are extended to their maximum length, as shown in Fig. 4, the flared The conical recess 9 is preferably provided with an annular groove or undercut serving to receive a springy clips (shown in plan in Fig. 8). The clip is shaped to snugly fit the groove 9 and is provided with a pair of springy arms 8 between which the grooved outer end 1 of the inner tubular member of the filling appliance engages, so that when the latter is withdrawn from the chamber 6, the inner member is retained and released only when the parts have been extended to their maximum length. By this means the withdrawal of the filling appliance from the cap automatically extends the parts ready for use. a
When the device is to be placed in the chamber 6 of the cap a, the device is held by the bulb and the end of the tube Z is placed in the chamber 0 until it rests at the bottom of the conical recess 9. The bulb is now pushed into the chamber, the pressure exerted being suflicient to cause the three members 7:, Z, m to collapse, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The closing plug it is now placed in position to close the end of the chamber 6 (Fig. 1) the dished recess b taking over the rounded end of the bulb m as shown.
As previously described the base 7 of the chamber of the cap serves as a closing plug orthe like for the open end of the pen barrel when the nib holder 6 has been retracted, the screw threads 0 and (Z on the barrel and within the chamber at respectively being so arranged relatively, that when the cap a is screwed on to the end of the barrel 0, the plug is drawn down on to the seating formed at the open end vc of the barrel immediately above the nib when in its retracted position (see Fig. 1). g
In the construction shown at Fig 6 the closed end of the bulb m is formed with an annular flange or lip m which together with the end of the bulb is somewhat increased in thickness, as shown, so that when the filler is placed within the chamber 0 in the cap a the end thereof will be closed by the thickened portion orhead of the bulb, he
outer surface of the latter beneath the flange m forming a close fit within'the open end of the chamber 6.
Referring now to the construction illustrated-at Fig 7, it will be seen that the body of the barrel 0 of the pen has screwed therein a sleeve 1) constituting the nib and feed holder which is adapted to be removed in the usual manner when the pen is to be filled. In this construction the outer peripher of the barrel is threaded at c at the point elow the screwed sleeve 6 so that when the cap a is screwed thereon there will be no tendency for the sleeve tobeoome displaced, the cap a, engaging the barrel. In this construction the cap a is provided with a wall or partition f the upper side of which forming the bottom of chamber e is formed with a conical or other shaped recess similar to the construction shown at ig. 1. Either or both of the chambers d and e in the cap may be provided with one or more vent holes 0.
It will be understood that the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be modified without departing from the principle of the invention. For instance, the cap may if desired, be made in 011601- more parts screwed or otherwise connected together to facilitate or reduce the .cost of manufacture.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America 1. A fountain pen or the like device com prising a body member, a removable protective cap member adapted to be fitted on to either end of said body, a chamber in one of said members and a removable and telescopically collapsible filling appliance housed m said chamber, said appliance comprising at least two tubular members one of which is collapsible.

A fountain pen or the like device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the protective cap for the nib or stylus is formed with two chambers separated by a partition one of said chambers forming a container for a removable filling appliance, while the other chamber is adapted to fit over either end of the pen body, the partition constituting a I closin plug for the pen barrel.
4. fountain pen or the like device, as claimed in claim 3 wherein the partition separating the chambers in the cap is formed on one side as a plug for the open end of the pen barrel and is provided on the opposite side with a recess to receive the end of the filling appliance.
