Abstract
514,513. Fountain pens. MABIE, TODD, & CO., Ltd., JOHNSON, L. W., and SEARS, E. S. April 7, 1938, No. 10691. [Class 146 (iii)] Self-filling fountain pens. with ink inlet at the end remote from the nib, have an air tube to evacuate the contained air during filling. The reservoir consists of a tube 5, Fig. T, and collapsable sac 4 surrounding an air tube 13 having a vent 17 and extending into a sleeve 10 which with a nut 11 secures the sac 4 to the nipple 6. A plug valve 8 with extension 14 is carried by cap 7 to maintain a tight joint. A spring 19 between sleeve 10 and a shoulder 21 on tube 13 causes the parts to return to normal position while drawing-in ink after their collapse for expelling the air. In a modification, Fig. 4, with piston filling, tube 13 is connected at one end to a sleeve 25 carrying a piston 23 working in a tubular extension 36 of the nipple 6. Spring 19 is normally held depressed by a stem 26 carried by a knob 27 screwing into cap ,3. The barrel cap 7 is threaded on to the plunger nut 32. Tube 13 is plugged at 24, the air being expelled through vent 17 on the return movement of the plunger. In a further modification, Fig. 7; filling is effected by a collapsable sac 42 secured to a bush 43 formed with a left-hand thread and receiving the secondary cap 45. Tube 13 terminates within a bore 41 closed by a seal 15 carried by a cap 47.
