Abstract

1,148,082. Retractable ball-point pens; pro- , pelling pencils. T & T MFG. CO. 31 Oct., 1966, No. 48784/66. Heading B6P. A carrier 26 for a ball-point pen cartridge or pencil 29 is externally threaded to engage the internal threads of a bushing 25 fitted into the end of a first tubular section 12. An extension 30 of the carrier 26 has a hexagonal section which mates with a part 36 of a second tubular section 15, also of hexagonal section, whereby relative rotation is prevented and axial sliding movement allowed between the carrier 26 and the second tubular section. Relative rotation between the first and second tubular sections 12 and 15 thereby propels or retracts the carrier 26 relative to the first tubular section 12. A front barrel portion 20 of the writing instrument frictionally surrounds the forward end of the first tubular section 12 and a cap portion 21 frictionally surrounds the second tubular section 15. A detent 37 is provided in the hexagonal part 36 so as to apply sufficient friction on the hexagonal extension 30 of the carrier to prevent writing pressure on the writing unit 29 from causing retraction of the unit and its carrier into the casing.
