Pencil - holders. - Pencil-holders of the kind wherein a lead-gripping piece is screwed into the tubular bodv of the holder are modified by the provision of a push-rod abutting against the end of the lead and gripped by the gripping-piece when it is screwed home, the lead being merely held by friction at the outer end of the gripping-piece. The gripping-piece is split at both ends, preferably by a single diametral cut at the outer end and two cuts at right-angles to the inner end, and is provided with an axial bore a<1> to receive the end of the push-rod d of the same diameter. The lead f within the axial bore is of less length than the gripping-piece, its inner end abutting against the end of the push rod and its outer end being held by the split end of the gripping-piece. To project the lead the member a is slightly unscrewed and the pencil-holder given a jerk, point downwards, thereby causing the push-rod to force the lead outwards. A weight e may be provided' within the tubular body to assist the push-rod in projecting the lead, and may comprise a cylindrical body containing spare leads. When the lead is sufficiently projected the gripping-piece is screwed up tightly to grip the push-rod. In a modification, Fig. 7, the push-rod d' is provided' with a screw thread and has a lateral projection i which projects into a longitudinal slot in a tube g surrounding the rod within the pencil body. An extension k on the tube g projects through the closed end of the bodv b and is secured bv a pin m to a rotatable button h. Screw threads may be provided in the bore of the gripping- piece to engage the threads upon the push-rod d<1>, and the front end d<2> of the rod may be reduced to enable it to follow the leads sufficiently to project them from the gripping-piece. To retract the lead the gripping-piece is loosened and the lead point pressed upon the writing surface.
