Abstract

197,104. Hoffman, E. J. Feb. 28, 1922. Pencil-holders. - In a pencil - holder of the screw-propelled type, the follower in conjunction with the casing forms a receptacle for spare leads and is provided at its lower end with integral means for gripping the lead in use. The follower 4, Figs. 1 and 4, comprises a metal plate provided with a central longitudinal groove 5 and with semi-circular ends 6 which are flanged in the same direction to form the base and cover respectively of the receptacle. The diameters of the semi-circular ends 6 are less than the width of the plate 4, thereby leaving lateral tongue portions which are received in longitudinal grooves 3 in the barrel 1. A round nut 7 secured in the groove 5 at the upper end of the plate 4 receives and engages a screw 15 which lies within the groove and at its upper end has a non-threaded portion 14 passing through a central hole in a cap nut 11 screwed into the end of the barrel. A pocket clip 12<1>, Fig. 6, with a disc head 12 threaded over the plain end of the screw, is secured between the cap nut 11 and a milled head 18 attached to the screw and rotatable therewith. The lead 19 is gripped by a spring jaw 8 formed at the lower end of the plate 4 by making two slanting longitudinal slits joined by a transverse slit and downwardly bending the tongue of metal included between them. Spare leads are inserted or withdrawn from the combined follower and refill chamber by unscrewing the cap nut 11 and pulling upon the milled head 18 to withdraw the screw 15 and its attached follower 4. In a modification, the capacity of the refill chamber is increased by providing a semi-circular piece on both sides of the plate, and the projecting screw is enclosed within a central longitudinal tube.
