Abstract

171,154. Witt, W. P. de. Aug. 6, 1920. P e n c i l holders; erasers. - A pencil holder, adapted for advancing and ejecting the lead, is provided with means arranged so that no injury is caused if the propelling - mechanism be continually operated after the parts have assumed their extreme positions. A thin lead 18 is held in a carrier-tube 39, which is slightly less in diameter than the lead and is slit and countersunk at the forward end for its reception. The tube 39 slides in a stationary longitudinallv slotted guidetube 36, and is provided at its rear end with a projection which enters a collar 44 slidable on the guide-tube and having screwthreaded engagement with a rotatable propeller-tube 27. In the carrier-tube 39 slides a pusher 45, also provided with a projection at the rear end passing through the slot in the guide-tube into a collar 48 similar to the collar 44. The collars are connected by a member 49, Fig. 4, provided with T-shaped ends 50, 51 and ears 51<1> on the shank, and which is located and may slide in slots in the collars. The connecting-member 49 is held in place by a spiral spring 55 encircling the tube 36 and slidable thereon and normally tending to hold the collars against the heads 50, 51. The propeller-tube 27 is formed with straight portions 30, 31 at the front and rear ends respectively of the threaded part 29. When the lead has been advanced until the collar 44 on the carrier-tube has entered the straight portion 30 of the tube 27, continued rotation of the latter causes the collar 48 and pusher 45 to be fed further forward, this motion being communicated to the collar 44 by the spring 55 until the contact of the forward end of the carrier-tube 39 with the conical portion 16 of the barrel 15. Further rotation forces the collar 48 forward against the action of the spring 55, thus causing the pusher to eject the lead from the carrier, until the collar 48 also enters the straight portion 30, when reciprocatory motion ceases and strain is prevented if the tube 27 be further rotated. When the rotation is reversed, the spring 55 forces the collar 48 into engagement with the screw 29, and it is thereby fed back until the heads of the member 49 engage the collars and draw the collar 44 into engagement with the screw. The straight portion 31 at the rear end of the screwed portion 29 acts in a similar way to prevent strain. The forward ends of the guide-tube 36 and propellertube 27 are held in position in the barrel by an alignment-tube 32, which consists of a cylindrical rear portion 33 having a tight fit in the barrel 15, a frusto-conical portion 34 forming a bearing for the end of the tube 27, and a cylindrical forward portion 35 acting as a holder for the guidetube 36. The inner-end of the guide-tube bears against a disc 37 tightly fitting in a part 28 of the propeller-tube and serving as the bottom of a receptacle for refills. The rear end of the propeller-tube is tightly fitted in the forward cylindrical portion of a member 21, rotatably mounted but held against longitudinal movement in the rear end of the barrel 15. The member 21 projects beyond the end of the barrel to receive an eraser 24, which closes the end of the refill receptacle, and a head 22, by means of which the propeller-tube is operated. The guidetube 39 may be dispensed with.
