Abstract

273,558. Hasselquist, H. S. Nov. 5, 1926. Pencil holders. - In a pencil holder of the type in which feedfingers are forced into engagement with the lead bv relative rotation of two parts of the holder, the whole of the feed-fingers are maintained in, or are released from engagement with the lead according to the direction of rotation of the parts of the holder. The barrel 10 is bored to receive a non-circular, preferably triagular, lead holding tube 13, Fig. 5, formed with slots 29 in each face and rearwardly-inclined projections 30 at the lower end of the slots. Beyond the slots, the tube 13 is circular and is tapered and split to form a grip for the lead. The upper end of the bore of the barrel is widened to serve as a magazine from which leads are fed automatically to the tube 13, a conical annulus being secured in the magazine to facilitate the passage of the leads into the tube. The outer end of the barrel is closed by an eraser. Mounted on the tube 13 by means of a correspondinglyshaped split portion 36, Fig. 7, is a member 33 provided with a number of feed-fingers 37 adapted to project through the slots 29 into engagement with the lead. The fingers are formed with inclined front and rear faces 40, 41, and are constructed so as normally to spring apart from the lead. The rear faces 41 of the fingers are engaged by the circular front end of a sleeve 34, Fig. 2, mounted by means of the triangular rear end 45 on the tube 13. A screw-thread 44 on the sleeve 34 is engaged by the screw-threaded ends of fingers 49, Fig. 11, on a sleeve 48 rotatably but not longitudinally movable on the end of the barrel 10. A ferrule 12, Fig. 2, forming the point of the pencil holder, is secured to the sleeve 48. the outer end of the ferrule being bored to act as a guide for the lead. In order to project the lead, the ferrule 12 is rotated in a counterelock direction, thus rotating also the sleeve 48, and by the engagement of the fingers 49 with the screw 44, retracting the sleeve 34. The leadgripping fingers 37 are thus allowed to spring apart from the lead. Further movement of the sleeve 34 causes a projection 46 thereon to engage a lug on member 33 to retract the fingers. Rotation of the ferrule in the opposite direction causes the sleeve 34 to move forward and engage the faces 41 of the fingers 37, which are thus forced into engagement with the lead, the part 36 engaging sufficiently tightly with the tube 13 to enable this to be effected without, first moving the fingers forward. The fingers are moved forward with the sleeve after gripping the lead, until the faces 37 engage the projections 30 in the tube 13, this engagement serving to cause the fingers to engage the lead more tightly. The fingers 49 on the sleeve 48 are resilient, so that, should the ferrule 12 be further rotated after the sleeve 34 has reached the limit of its travel, the fingers will spring out of the screw-thread 44.
