This invention relates to a magazine pencil and more particularly to improvements in a continuous feed magazine pencil of the push feed type.
The object of my invention includes the provision of an eiiicient push feed magazine pencil whereby leads are fed continuously from a magazine by a special mechanism described below.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a ush feed pencil having but few parts and w erein all of the parts are rugged Y and not liable to break or get out of order.
My invention further provides a lead feeding and lead holding mechanism which includes a double cone chuck member actingm combination with means which engages one of the conical surfaces for closing the elements of the chuck member upon the lead to 29 thus hold said lead inrwriting position, and
means in the form of a suitably retarded lioating sleeve for acting on the other conical su'rface to thereby close the chuck elements upon the lead and grip it during the time the said lead is being advanced to a new writing position. The chuck member is also provided with spaced fianges which, under certain cone dtions, serve as. stops for the floating sleeve. Like numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. ,I `It is one of the prime purposes of my invention to provide a self feeding pencil of the push type which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and whereby leads are firmly held in writing position by a simple double cone chuck member which also operates in combination with a frictionally retarded ioating sleeve ormember for closing the chu'ck elements upon the lead when the sameis moved in advanced position, thereby having but few moving parts and 00 these parts are all of substantial and rugged construction. Said parts cooperate with the relatively fixed parts which are firmly held in the outer pencil b'arrel as will be explained more fully below.
In a preferred form of construction the pencil comprises an inner barrel 10 and an outer barrel 11 slidably united. The inner barrel 10 is provided at its lower or tip end with a chuck carrying cup 12. This cup has a sloping bottom' for guiding the leads linto an opening 13 into which is fitted the threaded end 14 of the chuck member 15. A frictionally retarded floating sleeve or member 16 having a partition wall 18 with an opening there- 75' in and a continuous cup member 17 is held upon the chuck member s'o as to move within the limits of flanges 23 and 24 when the chuck member is reciprocated. The lower end of the frictionall retarded floating sleeve or member is provi ed preferably with four slits. 20 whereby the. friction skirts 19 are formed for engaging member 37 to thereb retard the movement of sleeve 16. By thus engaging the stop 40 the split chuck members or elements 29 are clamped upon the lead by the enlarged clamping surface 27 as is shown in F ig..1. This guide member has a lead holding part or member 36 for frictionally engaging the lead and preventing it from falling through. In order to provlde resiliency for the lead holding member 36 the tip member is cut into two sections by a slit 44, shown in dotted lines. F rom .the description thus far given it is apparent thatthev innerV barrel is reciprocated with respect to the'outer barrel whenever the cap is pushed downward and the outer barrel is held, as may be done by holding it in the hand and pushing on the cap with the thumb. When so operating the pencil, the chuck carrying cup, which is held on the lower or tip end ofthe inner barrel, is moved towards the tip of the pencil from the osition shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2. l
In thus moving upper conical surface 21 disengages from the stop 40 and when thus disengaged the resiliency of the chuck arms will open the chuck elements so as to momentarily disengage the clamp surface 27 from the lead.. The moment that the lower or tip cone surface 22 strikes the chuck engaging part or partition wall 18 ofthe frictionally retarded floating sleeve-or member 16, the clamp surface 27 again closes on the lead and as the parts are moved forward the lea is moved forward also to theV limit of the stroke (see Fig.
2). The friction parts or skirts 19 engage the outer surface of the cup-like member 37 with vsufficient intensityto cause the floating member to lag until parts 24 and 18 engage, when the chuck member is returned to its normal position, thereby permitting the clamp surfacetoopen and release the lead as the chuck member recedes. The operation described is repeated and with each repetition the leadis fed forward -a definite distance and is temporarily held iirst by the lead holding parts 36 and in final writing posithe, parts of the pencil the tion by the-f combination of said parts and the chuck members or elements 29, as eX- plained above. It is noted that my construction permits the use of short lkengths of lead to be fed, as b holding the pencil vertically leads will be ed by gravity before entering part 36. x
Having now described my invention; what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a push feed pencil, an outer barrel and an inner barrel slidably held in said outer barrel, a cup mounted on said inner barrel to form therewith a magazine for leads, said cup having an aperture in its bottom, a chuck member secured in said aperture, said check member having lead engaging surfaces and two conical outer surfaces, means carried by the outer barrel for engaging one of said conical outer surfaces for closing the lead engaging surfaces upon the lead, a sleeve on said chuck member, said sleeve having `means thereon for engaging the other of said outer conical surfaces of the chuck member to close the lead engaging surfaces upon the lead when the chuck is moved forward for carrying the lead forward to a new position, and means on the outer barrel for engaging said sleeve to frictionally retard its motion.
2. In a. push feed pencil, an outer barrel and an inner barrel slidably held in said outer barrel, a cup mounted on said inner barrel to form therewith a magazine for leads, said cup having an aperture in its bottom, a chuck' member secured in said aperture, said chuck member having inner lead'engaging surfaces and upper and lower conical surfaces, a stop for said upper surface for closing the lead engaging surfaces upon the lead and holding the same in writing position, a sleeve on said chuck member, said sleeve having means thereon for engaging the lower of said surfaces of the chuck member to close the lead engaging surfaces upon the lead when the chuck is moved forward and thereby carry said lead forward to a new position, and
means carried by the outer barrel for guiding outer surface of said chuck member, a member floatingly carried on said chuck member for engaging another of said outer surfaces when said chuck member is moved in a for- Ward direction, a flange on said chuck mem ber for limiting the movement of said floatingly carryin member, and means for frictionally retar ing the movement of said floatingly carried member.
4.' In a push feed magazine pencil, the combination of an outer barrel and an inner barrel slidably united, a cup Ymember having an aperture 1n its bottom, said cup member mounted on said inner barrel to form therewith a magazine for leads, a chuck member secured in said aperture, said chuck member having inner lead engaging means and outer conical surfaces, stop means fixed with respect to the outer barrel for closing the lead engaging means of said chuck member on the lead, a member iioatingly carried on the chuck member, said floatingly carried member having chuck closing means and friction skirts, and means carried by said outer barrel for enga ing said skirts.

6. In a lead feeding mechanism for magazine pencils, a chuck member having chuck elements with tapered jaws disposed to form two conical surfaces in combination with y means for engaging one of said surfaces for closin the chuck elements, a frictionally retarde floating member positioned to act on the other of said conical surfaces, means for retarding said iioating member, and means for reciprocating said chuck member.
7. A lead feedin and lead holding member comprising a t readed hollow stem and flexible arms formed into a conically surfaced chuck member having inner lead engaging surfaces to grip a lead, spaced fiangeson said chuck member a sleeve having a partition wall floatingly disposed between the said spaced flanges, and relatively fixed means for engaging one of said conical chuck surfaces for holding the lead in writing position.
8. A lead feeding and lead holding chuck member for push feed pencils having a hollow stem and chuck elements, said chuck elements having inner lead engaging surfaces for gripping the lead to hold the same in writing position, a sleeve, a stop member, and outer upper and lower conical surfaces, the upper conical surface engaging with a stop member to close the lead holding surfaces upon a lead for feeding the lead forward and the lower conical surface arranged to engage a floating sleeve, and means for retarding said ioatmg sleeve. v
9. In a push feed magazine pencil, the combinationof an outer and an inner barrel slidably united, a cup member having an aperture in its bottom, said cup member mounted on said inner barrel to form therewith a magazine for leads, a chuck member secured in said aperture, said chuck member having inner lead engaging surfaces and outer conical surfaces separated by a flange, a member floatingly carried on said chuck member for enga n one of the outer surfaces when said c uc member is moved in forward direction, and means for retarding he movement of said iloatingly carried mem- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set rlxyiand on this 27th day of November, A.
