Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM w. rATTEson, or STAUNTON, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR or ONEHALF TO EDWARD I. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,313, dated July 14-, 1885.
' Application filed January 24, 1885. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. PATTEsON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing Tablets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to scratch-books or writing-tablets designed more particularly for school purposes, but as well adapted to be used in general business transactions.
The peculiarity of the invention is confined to the box-head of the tablet and its connections. 1
In the drawings which make a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspec-' tive, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of my invention. v
In the figures, A represents the scratch-book or tablet proper, showing the leaves thereof of material to be written upon either by pen or pencil, as occasion may require. These leaves are confined at one end in any suitable manner in a pasteboard or other'suitable head, 0. The ends of the leaves pass sufficiently far into the head to give it strength, supporting it so that said head cannot collapse or fall in, as the stubs of the leaves when torn off or removed will support it. The leaves are perforated, as is usual, so that they may be readily taken off when not needed.
0 represents the pasteboard head, which confines one end of the leaves. This head is provided with a box, D, which runs crosswise of thetablet, and which is provided with a cover, e. This cover is hinged at one side, and is held in normal position by means of a rubber strap, d. The ends of this strap are secured to the ends of the box, and it passes over the center of the cover. The cover is provided with a finger-strap, f, by means of which it is raised or opened. When this strap f is released, the rubber strap immediately closes 4 down the cover or returns it to its normal condition.
The box or chamber D is intended to con tain and retain, when not in use, a pen and pencil and short rule with scale or otherwise, 5' or such other useful articles which it may be capable of retaining.
The lower leaf, B, of the cover of the tablet will be made of stiff board, while the upper leaf is intended to be made of thick blotting- 5, pad paper. A piece of cloth, a, is secured to the head 0, and also to the upper leaf, B. This cloth enables the upper leaf to raise and lower as if hinged on the linew at, just over the stubs, the cloth really forming a pliable hinge. 6(
This construction of tablet as an entirety forms one which can be constructed cheaply, and one which can always be made to carry conveniently such tools or articles as will be handy in its use. I 6
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by I Letters Patent, is-
A tablet or scratch-book provided with a head, 0, which head is made to embrace the 7 stub ends of the leaves of the tablet, and which is provided with a box or receptacle and a cover, 6, held normally in place and returned to same after displacement by a band, d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. PATTESON.
