SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,141, dated May 30, 1899.

To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, EMoRY'J. CARTER, a.

' citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sand usky and State of 7 Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill and Account Files and Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon ,which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bill and account files and cabinets, and is adapted to provide'an easy and ready reference to bills and accounts kept therein.

The invention consists, essentially, of a triangular two-part cabinet having when opened sets of vertical compartments in one portion thereof and other sets of horizontal compartments in another portion, so arranged that the partitions thereof extend one beyond the other for the purpose of numbering or mark- 1 ing each, so they can be readily designated,', and provided with a desk portion or tabletholder; individual ledgers for each customer,

preferably made in a small size, so as to allow the cabinet to be as small as possible consistent with the number of ledgers required,

the ledgers to be so made as to have a special space at the extreme top and bottom of the outside cover for the number and name of the customer whose account is kept therein, (with this arrangement when the spaces on the ledgers are filled in with the customers number and name and placed in the correspondingnumbered compartment in the cabinet any special ledger desired can be readily and easily found;) a pad consisting of any number of slips desired, the length thereof preferably enough longer than the ledger to allow a merchants business-card to be printed there on, if desired, so as to show above the top of the ledger when the pad is placed therein and to have a place to write the customers name, with carbon paper for each pad, preferably attached thereto at the bottom, though it can be used loose, ifdesired.

The invention further consists in the novel construction and arrangements of the parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cabinet closed, looking from the bottom righthand corner, showing the folding support closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cabinet open and in position for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a perspective View of one of the step-brackets.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Referring to the drawings by letters, A indicates my ledger holder or cabinet, preferably triangular in shape, which is composed of two triangular-shaped body portions A A, hinged together at their inner base edges and adapted to fold together to form a triangular cabinet, as shown in Fig. 1. Suitable looking devices are provided at the apex of the triangle for securing the two parts together when closed. a is a folding prop secured to the under side of one of said portions A by suitable hinges. a a, are legs or rubber buffers secured to the under side of said cabinet and upon which the said cabinet rests when in closed position. a a are rubber buffers secured to one side of one of the portions A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and upon which, together with the said folding support, the cabinet rests when open. Each of said triangular portions consists of the back or hypotenuse A side or end pieces A A and the bottom piece A. In the interior of each of said triangular parts A are the transverse vertical partitions B, secured in suitable grooves 19 b, removable or otherwise, and parallel with the back or hypotenuse A thereof. Each of said portions A is also provided with a vertical partition B, set in a suitable groove 1) between the back A and the partition 13 centrally thereof and secured therein, removably or otherwise. b b are parallel vertical grooves in the end walls of the portion A A and the partitions B B between the back A and partitions B, as shown, into which are set vertical parallel partitions O C C. These partitions are stationary or removable and are constructed of wood, metal or cardboard, suitably braced, or any other desired material, and may be designated by numbers or marks, as desired. In the bottom of each one of the pockets formed in the parts A A are step-brackets B B'-, (shown in Figs. 3 and 4,) so constructed and placed therein that a step will come in each one of the minor pockets formed by the partitions O for the purpose of lessening the depth thereof.

D is a tr'angular open pocket or receptacle in the part A of the holder or cabinet A, which occupies a vertical position when the cabinet is in use and is for the purpose of holding pencils, pens, ink, &c.

D is a receptacle or holder in the part A, that occupies a horizontal position when the cabinet is open and is for the purpose of receiving and holding a duplicate pad I) (shown in Fig. 2) and for use as a desk, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A bill and account file or cabinet consisting of two triangular body portions, hinged together at theirinner base edges and adapted to be folded together, a series of removable partitions in each body portion set parallel with the hypotenuse of the triangle and a stepped support situated in each of said body portions, so arranged as to form compartments of uniform depth.

2. A bill and account file or cabinet consisting of a case, triangular in shape, composed of two triangular body portions hinged together at their base edges, one of said body portions provided with a folding support, a series of removable partitions in each body portion set parallel with the hypotenuse of the triangle, and a stepped support, in each body portion, so arranged as to form compartments of uniform depth.

3. A bill and account file or cabinet, consisting of two triangular body portions, hinged together at their inner base edges, one of said body portions being provided with a folding support, each body portion divided into two compartments by partition B a stepped support situated in each of said compartments, and a series of removable partitions set parallel with the hypotenuse of the triangles and so arranged relative to the stepped support as to form a number of compartments of uniform depth.

4. Abill and account file or cabinet consisting of two triangular body portions hinged together at their inner base edges, one of said body portions being provided with a folding support, each body portion divided into two compartments by a removable partition B, a removable partition B adapted to form with the sides and bottom of said body portion a triangular-shaped pocket, a stepped support set within each of said compartments, and a series of removable partitions set parallel with the hypotenuse of the triangle, and so arranged relative to the stepped support as to form a number of compartments of uniform depth.
