CHARLES L. GLAFCKE, OF lVllICI-HGAN CXTY, ENI)Ni.l

ansias.
Michigan City, county of Laporte, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful lniprovel'nents in Filing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fiiling cases, the object of the invention being` the production of a filing case adapted for business purposes which shall be simple of construction and convenient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the ease may be increased in size to meet the demands of a growing` business in order that the initial expenditure may boreduced to a minimum.
*Other object/Savill appear hereinafter.
1vllith these objects inv View my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended clanns.
My invention further consists in a modification in the filing receptacles used in the device.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and 1n which,
` Figure` l is a front elevation of my improved filing case in its preferred form, 2 is a transverse section taken on line mof Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line y-y of Fig. l, Fig. 4: is a perspective vieW of partitions usedin the device, Fig.' 5 is a perspective view of a filing receptacle supporting tray, Fig. 6 is a perspec-- tive view of a filing receptacle, Fig. 7 1s a vertical longitudinal section of said filing receptacle, Fig. 8 is a perspective vievv showingthe modified forni of tiling receptacle, and Fig.' 9 is a longitudinal section of the latter. u
Referring now to the' drawings l designates the bottoni of the filing case which is y preferably .of Wood and rectangular in form,
and 2 the.,top of the filing case which is similar' to the bottom thereof. 3 designates ends of the case which are only essential to4 render the device neater in appearance. Detachable slotted partitions 4 and 5 are pro- I vided which are adapted lto support and separate the filing` receptacles which will be described hereinafter. The partitions fl and peeieation of Letters Patent.
.Application filed January 31, 1910.
Patented {fnly 2?, tfliiitlt Serial No. 541,956.
5 are provided with side and. end portions, i
thc former being provided with recesses t, as clearly slimvn in Fig. fi. lin order to se cure the partitions et and 5 together and to properly position the same'betwcen the bottom and top portions l and 2 respectively bolts 7 are provided which pass through the recesses (3 and said top and bottom of the case and when the nuts of said bolts are tightened the partitions are firmly secured in place. The filing receptacle trays 8 are substantially rectangular in forni and are provided with side portions 9 which have downwardly extending flanges adapted to engage the slots l() of the partitions Li and 5. These tra(l s are removable in order that 'the case may be increased or decreased in size as desired.
lilach filing receptacle ll comprises a sheet metal rectangular box having a hinged lid 12 the size of the same being; approximately equal to the size of the ling receptacle tray 8 so as to be capable of sliding. on the latter. The lid l2 is hinged ,to the receptacle by means of a rod 13 having ak bent arm. 14 at one end thereof the hinged joint beine' formed by means of extensions l5 provided on said lid'. The arm lt is provided to auto?.` matically open the lid l2 when the receptacle is .nearly Withdraivnfroin the case., and in order to do this the end of said arm contacts with an end of a partition. l2-his obviously causes the arm' to rotate and tov card-holding members 16 and 16, and theA card 17 inserted therein may' have the addresses or other information regarding parties Whose letters or other business papers are contained in the receptacle.
ln the modified form of receptacle supplementary lids 18 are provided and hinged to sides of the receptacle at right angles to the rear thereof by means of the rods 19, Said rods are suitably pivoted and provided With radial arms 19 by means of which said. lids may be manually opened or closed as desired. The lids 18 are also provided with card-liolding,l members similar to those provided on the lid l2 and Whichmay contain similar information When the business papers of two 'or more parties are filed in the receptacle. Each tiling receptacle il is provided with a number card as shown in l Fig. 1, and in` order to hold said cards in position card-holding members 15 are provided.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of m imp'roved filing case I do not wish to be i'mited Vthereto-as there might be various changes made in the details of construction andA arrangement of parts described, and hence I desire to avail myself of such changes and modifications as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the ap ended claims.
aving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- .ters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a casing comprising top and bottom longitudinal members, transverse partitions interposed between and connecting said members each of which is provided with a plurality of horizontal slots, trays having flanges adapted to seat insaid slots, and filing receptacles partitions arranged in couples and inter-A posed between said members, means for detachably securing said partitions to ether and to said members, trays the si es of which form downwardly extending flanges adapted to engage the slots, filing receptacles formed to slide on said trays, and lids hinged to said receptacles andadapted to open automatically when the receptacles are.
.between said members, means for detachabl securing said couples together and to sai members, trays the sides of which form downwardly extending anges adapted to engage the slots of said partitions, filing receptacles supported by said trays and designed to slide thereon, and lids hinged to said receptacles by means of rods each of which is provided with an arm which isA adapted to engage the end of a partition just before the receptacle is full withdrawn to open a lid, substantially as escribed.
5. In a device of the class described, top and bottom elongated rectangular members, horizontally slotted partitions arranged in couples detachably secured to said members and to each other by means of bolts, trays the sides of which form downwardl eX- tending flanges to engage the slots o said partitions, liling receptacles supported by said trays and designed to slide thereon, lids hinged to the top of said receptacles and means for automatically opening and closin the same, card-holding members arranged on the inside of said lids, and number card-holding members arranged 011 the front of each receptacle, substantially as described.
In Atestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence 'of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES L. GLAFCKE.
