WILLIAM C. MCDOUGALL, OF CHEBOYGAN, MICHIGAN.
PENClL-SHARPENE R AND ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,400, dated July 7, 1896.
Application filed March 24, 1896. Serial No. 684,670. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. McDon- GALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gheboygan, in the county of Oheboygan and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Pencil-Sharpener and Eraser, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined pencil-Sharpeners and erasers; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and efficient, and so constructed as to be retained upon a pencil, whereby the sharpener is always at hand and ready for instant use.
With this object in view the invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the sharpener in position upon a pencil. Fig. 2 is an end View thereof. Figs. 3 and 4; are detail perspective views, respectively, of the upper and lower members of the sectional ferrule. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the sharpener removed from the pencil.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a tapering sectional ferrule comprising two semitubular members 2 3. The member 2 is preferably of brass and is formed at one end with outwardly-extending wings 4 bent into a loop, such loop receiving and holding a block of rubber 5, adapted for erasing purposes. Each side of the member 2 is turned over and forms a longitudinal guide 6, which may be held between the fingers of the hand when the sharpener is being used.
The member 3 of the ferrule is of steel and has a central slot 7, one side of which forms a knife 8, which knife is remote from the edges of said member 3, and by reason of being so located it will be seen that the same receives direct and positive contact of the pencil when the latter is inserted within the ferrule 1 for the purpose of sharpenin At either side of the member 3 a flange 9 is provided. These flanges 9 enter the guidesfi in the member 2, and the turned-over sides of said member 2 are pressed down upon the flanges, thereby holding the latter Within the guides. A stop 10 is formed upon the member 2 at the end in which the rubber eraser is placed, and this stop limits the longitudinal movement of the member 3, as the latter is slid through the guides 6, when assembling the parts of the ferrule. To permit of expansion and contraction of the ferrule 1, due to diiferent sizes of pencils inserted therein, each member of the ferrule at either of its sides is slightly cut away, thereby forming slots 11. By reason of these slots the end of the ferrule may receive any ordinary-sized pencil, and be sprung upon the same, thus being in a position for instant use.
The operation and advantages of the herein-described sharpener will be apparent to those skilled in the art. To sharpen a pencil, one end of the same is inserted within the ferrule 1 and into contactwith the knife 8. By rotating either the pencil or the sharpener, as the operator may wish, the knife 8 gradually cuts away the pencil until the latter is sharpened. When the pencil has been sharpened to the desired degree, the sharpener is removed therefrom and placed upon the end opposite to the point. Thus the eraser will be in its proper position, and the sharpener convenient for instant use.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the class described, comprising a sectional ferrule formed of two semitubular members, a longitudinal guide formed at each side of one of said members, flanges formed at the sides of the other member, said flanged member being adapted to be slid longitudinally through said guides and be retained therein to lock the members together, and a sharpening-knife carried by one of said members, substantially as set forth.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a sectional ferrule formed of two tapering semitubular members, a longitudinal guide formed at each side of one of said members, flanges formed at the sides of the other member, the flanged member being adapted to be slid longitudinally through said guides and be retained therein to lock the members together, said flanged member also having a central slot, and a sharpenin g-knife provided at one side of said slot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
XVILLIAM (J. MCDOUGALL.
