To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spools for Perforated Music-Sheets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of spools or rollers on which perforated sheets of music are wound, and which spools are used in connection with self-playing musical instruments, and it con sists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement; and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The main object of the invention is to provide a spool of the abovenamed character,

which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and so made that the body of the spool on which the sheets are wound can be readily secured in place on the supporting frame therefor, or easily and quickly removed therefrom, and will serve as a protection for the sheets in handling or shipping the same.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a spool embodying the invention; Fig. 2, is an inner face view of one of the flanges of the spool;'Fig. 3, is an outer face view of the other flange; Fig. 4, is a view in side elevation of the spool mounted on a supporting-frame therefor and showing the parts in their operative positions; and Fig. 5, is a fragmental perspective view of a portion of the body of the spool.

Like. numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.

The reference numeral 10, designates the body of the spool, which may be made of any suitable size and material, but tubular in form, and is provided at one of its ends with an inwardly extending lug or projection 11, to engage a recess 12, formed on the inwardly extended and circular portion 13, of one of the flanges of the spool. The body 10, is provided in its middle portion with an opening 14, and has secured on its inner surface a block 15, which is provided with a headed extension 16, projecting outwardly so as to be about flush with the outer surface of the body. This projection is used to engage an opening in the end of the perforated sheet so that the same may be wound on the roller and securely held in its wound position. The flange 17, for one end of the body of the spool, is provided on its inner surface with the inwardly extended circular portion 13, having a ecess 12, to fit in one end of the body 10, and to engage the lug 11, respectively, and said flange also has centrally located therein a sleeve 18, in which is located one end of a shaft 19, which has its bearings in one of the upright portions 20, of the supporting frame 21, for the spool, which frame may be of the ordinary or any preferred construction.

As shown in Figs. 1, and 4, the sleeve 18, has seated therein a set-screw 22, to engage the shaft 19, and said shaft may be provided with a pulley or gear to which power may be applied for driving the same. The flange 24, for the other end of the body 10, is provided with an inwardly extended circular portion 25, to fit in the end of the tubular body 10, and is provided with a central opening 26, to receive a portion of a shaft 27, which is journaled in the other upright 20, of the supportngframe, and may be held thereon by means of a set-screw 28.

As shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, the shaft 27, is provided with a circumferential groove 29, near the outer surface of the flange 24, to receive one end of a sliding catch 30, which is movably mounted on a plate 31, secured to the flange 24, by means of straps 32, which are extended transversely over said catch or bar, the outer end of which may have a lateral projection 33, by means of which it may be moved back and forth. The plate 31, is provided near its outer end on its outer surface with a lug 34, to act as a stop for the catch bar 30, and to prevent it being displaced.

From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 4, the sheets of music can be readily wound on the body 10,
