E. A. GILSON. Paper-Cabinet.
No. 224,010] Patented Feb. 3, i880.
. WITNESSES INV'ENTOP 6% I @QJ NyETERs, FHOTO-LIYHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. ertson, or new YORK, N. Y.
PAPER CABiNET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,010, dated February 3, 1880. Application filed December 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. GILSON, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Gabinets; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecification.
Thenature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for holding paper in-water-closets, the paper being in the form of a roll with a friction device applied thereto, and a vertical knife being arranged in the device for cutting off the paper as required for use, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same on the line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view, showing a slight modification of the invention.
A represents a box of any suitable dimensions, which may have its front and part of its top open, as shown; or this may be provided with a cover, if so desired.
On the inner side of each end piece of the box is formed or attached a bearing, 0, having an inclined slot, 6, for the insertion of the journals D D of a spool or roller, B, which may thus be easily dropped into. its place, and the slots 3 6 being inclined in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the roller cannot jump out.
. However, to produce the proper friction a set-screw, G, is passed through from the outside of the-box into one of the bearings O, and bearing against the end of the journal D,
as seen in Fig.1 or rubber washers a a may be used between the ends of the roller and the face of the bearings, as shown in Fig. 3; or these washers may be applied at the ends of the journals D, as shown in Fig. 1, in which latter case the set-screw G may or may not be used, as may be deemed desirable.
F is the paper, in the form of a roll, placed on the roller B, and pulling out from underneath, which also aids in preventing the roller from jumping out of its bearings.
The bottom of the boxA extends suftlcientl y far beyond the side pieces thereof to receive a knife blade, E, fastened therein, and over which the paper F passes, so that it can be easily cut off or torn off over the edge of said blade.
The box is intended to be either permanently or detachably fastened up in a watercloset, and the device forms a convenient means forholding paper for such purposes as prevention of waste requires.
When the roll of paper is used up the roller can be easily removed, a new roll of paper put on, and the roller replaced.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The box A, provided with the inclined slotted bearings O O and knife E, arranged "ertically and below the supply-edge ot' the paper, in combination with a journaled paperholding roller, B, and tension device for regulating the discharge of the paper, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim, the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
I. B. GAsE, E. STEoKEL.
