ALVIN PAGE JOHNSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PHOTOGRAPH-ALBUM.
SPECFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,908, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed J une 13, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN PAGE JOHN- SON, of Boston, in the county f Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Photograph-Albums, of which the following, taken in c0nnection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of the leaves of photograph-albums; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of a single leaf of an album embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the picture-supporting leaf with the mattings forming the vinclosing-case removed. Fig. 3 is avertical section on line x a; on Fig. 2. Fig. a is a section on line g/ y on Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a section of the inclosing matting on line y y, with the picture-supporting leaf removed.
A is a strip of cardboard or other suitable material to which the picture-supporting leaf B is secured by a hinge-connection composed of cloth O in a well-known manner. The leaf B is made somewhat smaller than the com- Y pleted bool-page is to be as shown, and has secured thereto upon either side along its inner edge the thickeningpieces a a, and has secured thereto by their ends only the bands b b of thin strong paper or cloth, beneath which the ends of the pieturecard c are placed, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
Two mats, D, made preferably of thin cardboard or thick paper, and havin gsuitable openings cut through them, through which to view the pictures, are secured to opposite sides of borderiilling pieces d d and d', as shown in Figs. l and 5, so as to form a chamber between said mats to receive the leaf B, with one or more pictures mounted thereon. The upper and lower filling-pieces d d are made slightly wider at their outer ends than at their inner ends, so as to make the chamber between the mats D D slightly tapering, and theupper and lower edges of the leaf B are correspondingly tapered, s0 that when the leaf B is inserted in the chamber between the mats a wedging action takes place between the edges of the leafB and the inner edges of the lling-pieces d d, whereby the mats D are retained in position by friction, but can be readily removed by the exertion of a little force.
The great advantage of this construction of album-leaves-viz., the facility with which pictures can be inserted, removed, and replaced without injury to the matting--w-ill be obvious from the foregoing description.
Instead of the bands b b the picture-cards may be secured to leaf B by gum or other adhesive material, if desired.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. Aphotographicalbum-leaf composed of a picture-supporting leaf provided with two narrow bands of tough paper or cloth secured thereto by their ends only, and adapted to impinge upon two opposite ends of the photograph to hold the same in position, and
a duplex matting in the form of an envelope to receive said picturesupporting leaf, provided with suitable openings through which to view the pictures, and adapted to be applied thereto or removed therefrom.
2. The combination of the picture-supporting leaf B, provided with the bands b b, and having its upper and lower edges made slightly converging, and the mats D D, secured to the illingpieces d d d, arranged to form a chamber to receive the leaf B, and tit its taper edges, substantially as described.
3. vThe combination of the leaf B, hinged to the strip A, and having its upper and lower edges made slightly converging, and the mats D D, secured to the filling-pieces d d d', arranged to form a chamber to receive the leaf B, and t its tapered edges, substantiallyas described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this speciiication,in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 9th day of June,
ALVIN PAGE JOHNSON.
