UNITED STATES PAETNT GFFICE.
JACOB H. HOBWITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. -Y.
FILE-BOOK, &e.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jason H.1IORWITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of the Bronx, city, count and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Books, &.c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to alford a simple, inexpensive device for use in filing, preserving and rendering accessible for exhibition or reference various articles, such as letters, prescriptions, samples, pictures and the like, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a top view of my improved file book with portions broken away; Fig. 2, is a cross section of a central portion thereof; Fig. 3, is an isometrical view of one of the binding and spacing strips; Fig. 4, is a section upon plane of line 4;4 Fig. 1; Fig. 5, is a top view of a central portion of the book open and broken away, showing a modification; Fig. 6, is a section upon plane of line 9-9 Fig. 8.
B represents a solid, rigid backing of wood or any other suitable fibrous material, to which the usual side boards or covers I), b, may be attached if desired, although the covers are not indispensable to my invention.
In the drawings, for convenience of illustration, the several signatures S, are represented as consisting of only single folds of paper or other material, it being understood that said signatures may contain any desired number of pages, as may be found most expedient. These signatures are each secured to the fiat surface f, of the back B, by one or more metallic strips a. In securing the signatures S in position on the fiat surface f', of the back, each signature is opened and placed in position on said fiat surface f, and a spacing strip a, laid longitudinally along the center or bight of the signature, the ends of the spacing and binding strip a, being then secured to the back B.
WVhile the binding and spacing strips a, may be of any desired shape and size in cross section, I prefer to make them in the form of elongated staples as shown in the drawings, that is to say each with an elongated middle or spacing portion a, having sharpened rectangular ends a", which may be driven into the back B. This form of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May a, 1907. Serial No. 371,794.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
binding and spacing strip is by reason of its cheapness and simplicityand the ease with which it may be applied, obviously preferable to the employment of strips secured in position by other means.
Obviously one or more strips a, may be used for each signature. Thus in Figs. 5 and 6, three relatively short staples a, a, a, are used in alinement,-one in the middle and one at or near each end of the bight of the signature. I prefer however to use a single staple for eachsignature as shown in Fig. l, letting the ends project slightly beyond the edges of the leaves, and securing the central portion of the strip a, by means of a brad (Z, or equivalent, driven through a perforation in the strip a,the object of this intermediate attachment of the strip a, to the back being to prevent the possibility of arching or looseness of the central portion of the strip, and also to prevent the withdrawing of the leaves of the signatures.
My improved file has many advantages over those heretofore known and used by reason of its simplicity, durability and convenience. It is not only more effective but it is more economical of space in that the whole superficial area of each page is available for use. It is also comparatively inexpensive in structure.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a book of the character designated, the combination of a rigid back of fibrous material provided with a flat inner surface, and a signature binding and spacing strip consisting of an elongated metallic staple adapted to be laid longitudinally along the bight of the signature and to have its sharpened rectangular ends driven into the flat side of the rigid back.
2. In a book of the character designated, the combination of a rigid back of fibrous material provided with a flat inner surface, and a signature binding and spacing strip consisting of an elongated metallic staple adapted to be laid longitudinally along the bight of the signature and to have its sharpened rectangular ends driven into the flat side of the rigid back beyond the edge of the signature.
JACOB H. HOBWVITZ.
