To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. MCCARTNEY, of Frankfort, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LabelOases; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication.

My invention relates to an improved case for the storage and retention of labels; and it consists in the mechanism herein pointed out, described, and claimed.

My invention. relates more particularly to a case for use with that class of labels that are printed in a continuous web or sheet and are separated therefrom as required. It could also be used in any situation where it would be desirable to separate portions of paper from a continuous web or roll.

In the drawings presented, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my case. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of my case online A B, Fig. 1.

Like reference-figures refer to like parts in the several figures presented, and are so referred to in this specication.

Referring more specifically to the drawing in describing the construction and operation of my device,.l, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, represents the walls of a rectangular box or case, as plainly shown in plan in Fig. 1.

2, Figs. l, 2, and 3, represents aroller that is journaled at each end in slotted bearings formed in the walls ofthe case in such manner as to admit of its free rotation, as shown at 3, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. These slots extend upward from the journals of the roller to the top of the case, such construction being employed to admit of the free introduction or removal of the roller therefrom. Upon this roller is wound the continuous web of paper or labels, the free end thereof being passed through slot 4, Figs. 2 and 3, in front of case, and'extending outwardly therefrom, as shown at 5, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In the construction shown the movable portion of the front is grooved or recessed, as shown at'8 8, Fig. l, to admit of the reception of corresponding proj ections,9 9, Fig. l, on the walls of the case. The line of separation or cut,forming the division between the fixed and movable portions of the case, forms the slot 4,hereinbefore referred to. The movable portion 7 of the front of the case is held down upon the bottom portion thereof,or upon the superimposed web of labels or paper when the same is in the slot, by means of spring 10, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or its equivalent.

The upper portion, as shown at 7, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is so constructed Spring 10 is pivoted at 11, Figs.' 1, 2, and 3, to

the wall lof the case in such manner as to admit of its being swung thereon into position. (Shown in dotted lines 12, Fig. 1.) This frees the movable portion 7 of the case and admits of its removal from the case. At au appropriate point on the front of the case I locate a projecting strip or plate,of metal or other suitable substance, having a serrated edge, as shown at 13, Figs. l, 2, and 3. The web of labels or paper passes over this, as shown at 14, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. I also provide a springgas shown at 15, Figs. 1'and3, one end of which is firmly attached to the case and the other end contacting with the end or periphery of the roller 2,the purpose of which is to prevent the a cabinet or case, and the projecting molded edges heretofore referred to furnish a neat and workmanlike finish to the same. l

Having described the construction of my device, its mode of operation is as follows: Spring 10 is swung into the position shown in dotted A lines in Fig. l, when the movable portion 7 of roo l' the front ofthe caseis removed therefrom. The roller 2,having a web of paper or labels wound thereon, is introduced into the slotted bearings 3 in the walls of the case, bringing spring 15 into contact therewith, and the free end of the web or paper brought outside the case. The movable portion of the front of the ease is then replaced and spring I0 swung into position. (Shown in Fig. l.) The device is then in its operative position.

It will be observed that the movable portion 7 of the front ofthe case is held upon the web or paper by a greater or less pressure, depending upon the elasticity of spring l(). It is also obvious that I do not use either edge of slot 4 as a tearing or separating edge, its function being to hold the web under tension When the same is torn by proper contact With the ser- V rated edge of plate 13. The use of labels printed in a continuous Web and only separated therefrom as required possesses obvious advantages over the usual custom of storing them loosely, as waste is thereby nearly entirely avoided.

It is obvious that various changes in the construction of my device could be made Without departure from the central features shown in my invention; hence I do not limit myself to the specilic construction herein described and pointed out.

What I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a label-case having a spool Wound with labels, the spool and labels thereon mounted 3o to be rotated in the case, the combination therewith of the stationary and movable sections of the ease and the spring for impinging the movable section of the case against the label.

2. In a label-case having a spool wound with 3 5 labels, the spool being mounted in the case to be rotated, the combination, with the stationary and movable sections of the case, of the spring for maintaining the movable section of the case in contact with the label between the 4o opposing surfaces of the two sections, and the projecting strip of metal having a serrated edge on the front of the case, substantially as set forth.

3. In a label-case, the combination of the 45 stationary and movable front sections thereof, the spring for holding the movable section in contact with the labels between the stationary and movable sections, and the projecting strip of metal having a serrated edge on the front 5o of the case, substantially as set forth.
