. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. EARL, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL ROLL WRAPPING-PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND CUTTING PAPER FROM ROLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,312, dated February 26, 188 4.
Application filed November 9, 1883. (No model.)
Toall whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN H. EARL, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have ping-paper in rolls; and it consists of a cylindrical case or shell into which the roll of paper is loosely inserted, entirely dispensing with journal hearings or supports, and is provided with means for cutting or, tearing the paper into sheets of any required size as the same is drawn from the case.
Figure 1 is a top view of a case or receptacle embodying my improved features; Fig. 2,-
a vertical longitudinal section of the same,
and Fig. 3 an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a cylindrical case, provided at each end with the inclosing angular hands a a, which may be composed of any suitablesheet metal combining lightness and cheapness. The encirclingbands at a are provided with .the projecting clamping-lugs a which engage with the inner flanged end, If, of the twine-holding box B, and serves to retain the same in properrelation to the case A. In using the paper-holding receptacle when the twine-box is not required, the end of the case may be cl'osedby a flat plate or disk secured in the same manner as the twine-box. The case A is supported on the feet I), and is provided with the lateral projecting lips G G, which are wide apart at their junction with the case, but are gradually drawn close together toward the cutting-edge, so as to leave just space enough for the passage of the paper. The roll of paper D is placed loosely in the case, the endbeing passed through between the lips O C, the roll of paper rotating as the web is drawn out, and'which may be cut into sheets of any desired'size by an upward-movement of the hand whichis grasping the paper. The lips O O are provided near their longitudinal center with the aperture 01, which permits of the paper being grasped with the thumb and finger to start the same through far enough to be conveniently taken hold of after each "sheet has been severed. The projecting lips may be provided with an elongated aperture, so as to present a larger surface of the paper to be grasped by the fingers, the under lip keeping the web close up to the cutting-edge. By this arrangement the use of j ournal-bearings for the roll to revolve on are entirely dispensed with, thereby greatly simplifying and lessening the cost, of manufacturing the device.
The paper-holding receptacle may be of any desired form other than cylindrical, and may I also be constructed of wood or any suitable material, and finished in an ornamental style. The case may also be of a semicircular form, the roll of paper being dropped in from the top, instead of being inserted endwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-+ 1. The combination, with a receptacle or case, as described, of the projecting lips O O, provided with the central aperture, d,and a roll of wrapping paper inserted loosely in said case, the loose end whereof .is adapted to be drawn through between and severed by said lips into sheets of the required size, substantially as set forth. I
2. In a roll wrapping-paper holder and cutting device, the combination, with the case A,
of the lateral projecting lips O O-and the encircling-bands a a, provided with the clamping-lugs of, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN H. EARL.
