TOILET PAPER PACKAGE. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 2; \915.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916 FREDERICK H. MOORE, OF MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
roinnr-rarnn PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedNov. 21, 1916.
Application filed October 2, 1915. Serial No. 53,696.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. Moonn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Melrose, in the county of Middlese-X and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Paper Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toilet paper package adapted for use with a fixture such as that shown by Letters Patent of the United States Co. 1,136,700, granted to me April 20, 1915.
The package comprises a stiff tubular paper or pasteboard core, and a web of toilet paper wound compactly on the core in the form of a roll and covering the periphery of the core.
The fixture comprises a drum formed to closely fit the interior of the core, and a fix'ed spindle on which the drum is rotatively supported, the drum and the package core being connected by complemental male and female coupling members, so that a pull on the leading end of the web causes the rotation of the core and drum until a spring, connected with the drum and spin dle, arrests the rotation. A continued pull on the leading end of the web therefore causes the transverse breakage of the web along one of its many lines of weakness, the
s rin then actin to rotate the drum and p b a package backwardly, all as described in said patent. In applying a package to the drum, the core is moved endwise onto the drum, until a female coupling member in one end of the package engages a male coupling member on the periphery of the drum, said female member being a notch opening at one end of the core, and having a closed inner end which abuts against the male member and limits the movement of the core onto the drum. 7
The present invention has for its object to facilitate and render more convenient the coupling together of the core and drum, by obviating the necessity of carefully predetermining the relative positions of the male and female coupling members, during the operation of forcing the core to place on the drum.
The invention is embodied in a package,
the core of which is provided at one end with a plurality of female coupling members formed as notches open at the end of the core and closed at their inner ends, the
number of said notches and their distribution around the periphery of the core be ing such that one of the notches will coincide with and engage the complemental male coupling member on the drum when the core is moved endwise onto the drum, With out the necessity of turning the tube on the drum to any considerable extent while forcing it to place, and without the necessity of carefully predetermining the position of the core relatively to the male member on the drum, before forcing the core to place. The operator is therefore enabled to quickly couple the core to the drum without loss of time in securing proper registration between the male member on the drum and a female member in the core.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure'l represents a perspective view of a portion of my patented fixture, said portion including the drum. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the core of a package embodyingmy invention. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of a complete package embodying the invention. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of a portion of the core showing the notches or female. coupling members formed in a sheet metal'bushing.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings,16 represents the drum portion of the fixture, mounted on a spindle 14 which is attached to and supported by a bracket comprising a base 12 and an arm 13, to which the spindle is attached. The construction of the fixture as a whole may be as shown by the above-mentioned patent, and need not be here described in detail, the present invention relating wholly to the improvement hereinafter described in the toilet paper package which is removably coupled to the drum, the latter supporting the package.
17 represents the package core Which is a relatively stiff tube of paper, pasteboard or other suitable cheap material, and is formed internally to have a' sliding fit on the drum 16, so that the package may be moved endwise to place on the drum.v
18 represents a web of toilet paper cemented at its inner end as usual to the core, and wound in a compact roll thereon, the rolled web covering the entire periphery of the core.
I r y g u my n en n, I m in of time in adjusting the core while moving it to place, there being so many female members that one is sure to be in position to quickly engage a male member. I prefer to form the notches 19 with oblique sides which converge from the end of the core, so that each notch is widest at its mouth,
its engagement with the male member be-- ing therefore facilitated. If desired, the notches or female members may be formed in a sheet metal bushing ring 22 inserted in the core as shown by Fig. 4:, where the notches or female members are designated by the reference numeral 19 there being no notches in the end of the core.
The tongues formed by the notching operation are wholly within the rolled web and are externally covered and protected Copies of this patent may be obtained for against inward bending by the corresponding end portion of said web. In the modification shown by Fig. 4, the tongues are additionally protected by one end of the core 17. The female coupling members, the formation of which necessarily results in the formation of tongues capable of being easily bent or deflected inwardly, are therefore maintained in operative condition by the rolled web, while the package is in storage or is being transported.
I claim A toilet paper package comprising a tubular core and a web of toilet paper wound thereon and covering the periphery of the core, one end of the core being provided with a plurality of notches forming female clutch members opening at said end and having closed inner ends, either of said female clutch members being adapted to engage a male clutch member projecting from the periphery of a cylindrical drum fitting the interior of said core, the tongues between said notches being externally covered and protected by the corresponding end portion of the rolled web.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
FREDERICK H. MOORE.
