To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL BOMMER, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door-holders, and more particularly to improvements therein which make door-holders more practical and more advantageous in their use, and in their manufacture than those made heretofore.
The object of this invention is to provide a door-holder which is very simple in its manufacture and which may be readily ap plied to doors without detaching the separate parts composing the door-holder.
For this purpose my invention consists of an improved door-holder having a casing stamped or cast out of one piece of metal with front, side, top and bottom walls, and laterally extending flanges having openings for fastening screws; and an upwardly extending flange having no openings for the fastening of screws, but having an opening or slot for the rear end of the clamping plate pivoted therein, said plate having an opening with a straight rear edge and a curved front edge, a rod having a curved front edge and a straight rear edge adapted to move through the opening of the plate and through the top wall of the casing and having an enlarged portion adapted to move through the bottom wall of the casing, said rod being adapted to be held in position against upward movement by the plate but free to be moved downwardly therethrough, the curved and straight front and rear edges of the opening of the plate and the curved front and straight rear edges of the rod engaging each other and allowing the rod to move upwardly only upon the disengage ment of said edges.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my improved door-holder applied to a door, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1, taken on line 2, 2, Fig. 3 is a front-view of my improved door-holder, Fig. 4 is a vertical section of Fig. 3, showing the parts of the door-holder in inoperative position, Fig. 5 is a vertical section showing the parts in operative position, Fig. 6 is a horizontal section, taken on line 6, 6 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 is a plan view partly in section of the hinged plate and adjacent parts.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, a door-holder 10 is suitably secured to the door 11 hinged at 12 to the door casing 13. Referring also to Fig. 3, the door-holder 10 'is provided with a casing 15 having front, side, top and bottom walls, which are pressed out or east integrally with laterally extended flanges 17, each of which laterally extended flanges 17 is provided with an opening 18 to permit the passage of a fastening-screw 19 therethrough, and said casing having an upwardly extending llange 16 which is solid and has no openings forfastening screws. The upwardly extending flange 16 is provided with a slot 20 through which passes the rearward extension 24. of a lever plate 21 which is provided with an opening 22 through which the rod 23 is adapted to pass. The rearward extension 241 is comparatively narrow compared to the width of the plate 21 and fits into the small opening or slot 20 of the upwardly extending flange 16. Interposed between the lower part of the plate 21 and the upper part of the casing 15 is a spring 7 2 which acts to press the plate 21 continually upward. On the depression of the plate 21 the opening 22 is brought in registration with the opening 39 of the top wall of the casing 15, and thereby the rod 23 may readily move upward through the openings 22 and 39. \Vhen, however, the spring 72 presses the plate upward, the openings 22 and 39 are not in registration and thereby the edge of the opening 22 of the plate 21 clamps the rod and prevents it from moving upward. The shape of the rod 23 and ofv the openings 22 and 39 is straight at the rear, as shown by 37 and rounded at the front. as shown by 38, whereby reliable contact between the plate 21 and the rod 23 is secured and the rod is prevented from turning in the opening.
When the plate 21 is depressed the rod may readily pass through the openings 22 and 39 by the action of the spring 32. The lower portion of the rod 23 is rounded as shown at 63 and fits into the enlarged part 30. The rod 23 is provided with a cross-pin 25 on which is seated a metal washer 26 and a washer 27 preferably made of leather or any similar material. A second cross-pin 28 is provided below which a metal washer 29 surrounds the enlarged portion 30 of the rod 23 and between which washer 29 and bottom wall 31 of the casing 15 a spring 32 is interposed. The enlarged portion 30 is provided at its lowermost end and exterior to the casing 15 with a rubber buffer 33 having suitable corrugations to provide a suflicient friction with the floor. The buffer 33 is preferably made of rubber and is larger in diameter than the enlarged portion 30 and thereby limits the movement of the'enlarged portion 30 and the rod 23. This being so placed as to cause a simultaneous abutting of the washer 27 against the inner side of the upper wall 62 of the casing. The upper part of the rod 23 is provided with an angular plate 34:, the horizontal portion of which is secured to the rod 23 at its upper end 35 by upsetting and has a vertical protecting portion 36 parallel to the door so as to prevent the foot from soiling the door.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: After my improved door-holder has been applied to a door by the fastening screws, the parts are moved from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5, by pressing the plate 3% by the foot of the operator until the parts take the position shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the rubber buffer 33 is held firmly in contact with the floor through the clamping action of the plate 21 actuated by its spring 7 2 upon the rod 23 preventing all upward movement of the rod until the plate 21 is depressed from the full line position shown in Fig. 5, to the dotted line position in that figure, whereby the opening 22 of the plate 21 is brought into full registration with the opening 39 of the upper wall of the casing, thereby permitting the rod 23 to be promptly shot upward through the openings 22 and 39 by the action of the spring 32 until its movement is limited by the abutting of the leather washer 27 against the upper wall 62 of the casing and by the abutting of the rubber buffer 33 against the lower wall 31 of the casing, the parts then taking the position as shown in Fig. 4:.
By providing a casing out of one piece of metal having flanges in the fastening openings laterally of the length of the casing the door-holder may be readily fastened to the door in any position of the operating parts since no fastening opening is behind Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
the operating rod, as is the case with many of the door-holders now on the market. F urthermore, by providing the upwardly extending flange with the hingedconnection of the clamping plate a very convenient form is provided, which may be readily stamped or cast out of one piece of metal.
I have shown an embodiment of my improved device, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and' desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An improved door-holder comprising a casing stamped or cast of one piece of metal and having lateral flanges with fasteningopenings, and an upwardly extending solid flange having a slot, a spring-actuated rod having a straight rear-surface and an areshaped curved front surface, and a clamping plate hinged to the upwardly extending flange of the casing and having an opening with a straight rear part and an arc-shaped curved front part substantially the same shape as the rod, said rod being capable of being moved downwardly through the opening of the plate in one direction, and held by the clamping action of the curved front and straight rear part of the opening in the plate against upward movement.
2. An improved door-holder, comprising a casing having top and bottom walls and side and front walls, an opening in the top wall, straight at the rear and curved at the front, a circular opening in the bottom wall, a plate pivoted above the top wall of the casing having an opening of the same configuration as the opening in the top wall of the casing, and a rod withinthe casing, the upper part of which is of a configuration substantially like that of the opening in the top wall, and the lower part of which is of a configuration like the circular opening in the bottom-wall, whereby the rod is prevented from turning during the operation of the door-holder.
