FASTENER FOR COVERS OF FAILS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14', 1914.
Application filed April '7, 1913. Serial No. 759,510.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, JULIUs INsALsBn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Basom, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Covers of Pails, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements for fasteners for covers of pails or the like and has for its object to provide a device of this general character having novel" and improved means whereby the cover is effectively maintained in closed position and which may be operated with convenience an facility.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangernent of the several parts of my 1mproved fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully described in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my 1mproved pail showing the lid or closure therefor in raised position and disclosing parts of the pail proper broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the pail. Fig. 3 1s a section therethrough as seen on lme S-8, Fig. 2. Fig. 41.- is a similar view as seen on line a l, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section through the locking means of the top; and Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 5.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a pail of a character especially adapted for use for holding live ba t and ncludes the top plate or wall 5 provided with a suitable opening for entrance within the pail, and as herein disclosed such opening is adapted to be closed by the cover 7 hmgedly engaged with the top wall or plate 5 as indicated at 2 on the accompanying drawing, herein shown as provided with a depending flange 8 adapted to project through the opening for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident. I have provided animproved means for locking this cover and to this end, the same is depressed about centrally, as shown at 9 and provided with a longitudinal slot 10. The side walls of this depression 9 are inclined inwardly toward one another and the under face of the closure 7 is provided with a wear plate 11. Disposed through this slot 10 is a lug 12, the head portion of which is beveled along the side edges thereof coincident to the inclina tion of the side walls of said depression 9, so that when fitted closely therein, the upper edge of said lug is below the upper surface of the cover 7 and the inner end of said lug 12 is secured to a sliding bolt 13 which is guided through an opening 14 in the flange 8 of the cover 7. A keeper 15 is carried by the under face of the top wall 5 to receive the free end of said sliding bolt therein when the cover is in its lowered position and said bolt is effectively disposed and also carried on the lug 12 between the sliding bolt thereon and the under face of the closure, is a leaf spring 16. This leaf spring is bent and the free end thereof is adapted to contact with the wear plate 11 and through the friction of the spring against the wear plate, said sliding bolt is adapted to be securely held in any adjusted position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a fastener for the cover of a pail constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the spirit and scope thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as is defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is A device of the character described comprising a pail having an opening in its top, a hinged cover for said opening, said cover being provided with a slot, a keeper carried piece and adapted to be engaged with the by the pail, a finger piece directed through tional contact With the under surface of the the slot, a locking bar secured to the finger hinged cover.
M) In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my keeper, and a flat spring interposed between I signature in the presence of two Witnesses. the hinged cover and the locking ban, said JULIUS INGALSBE. spring having one extremity anchored to Witnesses:
