To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, Kozo SUGIYAMA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closure-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to closure fasteners for receptacles generally.

It has for its Jrinci Jal ob'ect the rovision of a yieldingly mounted latch element or keeper plate which may be canted from its normal parallel position with the adjacent walls of the receptacle with one of its ends operating as a fulcrum in order that the requisite angle of said latch element can be obtained and the same alined with a receiving slot in the closure, permitting the same to fully accommodate itself to the latch and to assume a fully closed position beneath the latch with the latter traversing the slot. This latter action is obtained through the fact that the latch device is resiliently mounted in a peculiar manner upon the receptacle and after it is passed through the receiving slot in the closure it will naturally assume its flat normal condition under the action of said resilient mounting, causing the ends of the latch member to extend respeotively beyond the walls of the slot.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a fastening device for receptacles which will accommodate itself uniformly to the bulk or contents within the receptacle. This is due to the fact that the latch member is resiliently mounted and it may be distended according to the conditions of the package and always operatively accommodate itself in a free and easy manner to the closure. 7

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a receptacle fastening of this character which will include a coiipcrating element upon the closure for receiving the latch member after the same is applied through the slot and hold said member against accidental displacement.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of an envelop showing the application of the fastener thereto.

Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the latch device canted to operatively receive the cloclosure. Beneath the slot and pressed from the sheet 8, is a boss or lug 5, having the office of a retainer for a purpose to be hereinafter mentioned.

A latch plate 6, is mounted upon the rear wall of the receptacle and is normally disposed in parallel relation therewith. It is held in flat contact with the wall under the normal or inherent action of an elastic mounting 7, which is preferably in the form of a short length of rubber passed through openin s 88, in said member 6, and the terminals thereof are then secured in any suitable manner to said rear wall of the receptacle. In this manner the latch plate or member is hingedly connected with the receptacle but is adapted to be canted or extended at an angle such as shown in Fig. 3, where it may be freely guided through the receiving slot l, in the sheet 8. The openings 88, are arranged beyond the center of the latch in order that the edge 9, of said latch may form a fulcrum on which the latch may be canted. The slot 4:, comes in line with the elastic mounting 7, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and after the latch member has been guided through the opening 4, it will tend to assume its normal flat condition and as a consequence thereof, the ends and 11, will be respectively extended beyond V the latch 6, is canted so as to caus'e'the same to aline with the slot 4-. The closure is then adjusted against the rear wall of the receptacle in order that the latch may automatically assume the position shown in Fig. 1. A reversal of this operation will permit the latch to be fully released from the closure and the latter again adjusted to an open position. 7

In the iiiodified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the receptacle therein illustiated is that of a suit-case. -The lug 5, thereon is substantially the equivalent of the lug 5. What is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a receptacle, a closure therefor having a transverse slot, and a lug on the outer face of the closure beneath its slot; of a latch plate adapted to he passed through said slot and itself having an opening to receive said lug, and an elastic connection between the plate and rear wall of the receptacle.-

2. The combination with a receptacle, a closure therefor having; a transverse slot, a lug on the closure beneath the slot, and a lock carried by the lug; of a latch plate niovabl y connected with the rear wall of the receptacle and of a size to he passed through said slot, the plate having an opening adapted to receive the lug and an additional opening adapted to receive the bolt of said lock.
