L. P. H AZEN DOOR STOP.
,umm
Patented Deo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
LEVI P. HAZEN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DOOR-STO P.
SPECIFICATIONv forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,768, dated December 2, 1884.
Application filed July 25, 1884. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI l?. HAZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, vin the county of Hamilton'and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a door-stop; and it consists in providing a hollow wall-knob composing the stop proper with grip arms or jaws, which engage ashouldered stud or pin on the door to hold it open, said jaws being released from locking engagement with the stud by a presser-trigger to close the door.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a door-stop and holding device embodying my invention, being shown in operative position. Fig. 2 isa central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail plan viewl of the interlocking devices of the doorstop. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the jaw-arms, and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the stop.
A represents a hollowed-out knob or block composing the body of the stop, being secured,
as customary, to the skirting-board B.
C represents the lower section of a door upon which a bumper-stud, D,is secured in a position to engage a coupling device within the knob when the door is wide open to hold it so. Stud l) is preferably composed of a screw, d, and a hemispherical elastic cushion or bumper, d, the screw passing through the bumper into the door for attachment.
E E represent a two-part box or frame set within the hollow of the knob; and F F are j atv-arms mounted upon pivots e, between the two sections of the boX.
a a are inwardly-projecting lugs at the rear pivotal ends of the jaw-arms, the lug a' being back of lug a, but iu direct contact therewith.
G isa coil-spring placed between lug a on jaw-arm F and lug b, projecting upwardly from section E of the box between the jawarms. The expansion of the spring upon lugs c a serves to close the jaws and keep them so until spread apart by a foot presser-trigger, c. The presser-trigger is composed of a headed bar, which passes downwardly through an opening in the knob and slots f in the twopartboX, and is provided with an inclined notch, c', at its lower end, which ou being depressed engages lugs a c', compressing the spring and expanding the jaws to release them from connection with the head of the screwstud D when it is desired to close the door.
H represents a pin passed through the knob and` the lug li at the rear 0f section E of the two-part boX, to sustain the box firmly within the knob.
I claim- Ina door-stop` the combination, with the hollow wall-knob A, of expansion-jaws F F', pivotally mounted within the knob and adapted to engage a bumper-stud, D, on the door, and a pressentrigger, c, for disengaging said jaws, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. s
LEVI '1). HAZEN.
Vitnesses:
JOHN E. JONES, JOSEPH Lrr'rELL.
