Description

(No Model.)
J. P. PREgLEY.
MARKING TAG.
No. 321,384. Patented June 30, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATnnT @rricn.
JOSEPH P. PRESLEY, OF STANTON, HIGHIGAll.
MARKING-TAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,384, dated June 30, 1885.
Application filed March 6, 1885.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH 1?. PRESLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stanton, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michi gan, h av e invented certain new and useful Improvements in llIarking-Tags, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to markingtags for dry goods and other articles; and it consists in the peculiar construction of an elongated slip of cardboard, or other suitable material, which is provided with edge-bindings,and an indicator both on its face and end, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a tag whcreon the number of yards in a piece of dry goods may be indicated correctly on its face, and when any number of yards have been sold the deductions from the original numbers may also be placed in a scale provided for the purpose.
My invention also consists of a strengthening binding for the tag, to allow it to be easily inserted between the folds of the goods without the liability of tearing or breaking the tag, and also to provide a tag which shall be easily and readily handled, and economically manufactured.
I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tag. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the cost and sale marks. Fig. 3 is a modified form of the same.
A indicates an elongated strip of cardboard or other suitable material, which constitutes the body of my tag. Upon the face or uppermost side of the tag A a scale, a, is printed or impressed by any suitable means. This indicator is so arranged that the number of yards sold can be deducted from the number of yards in the piece at the time, and an inventory can thus be kept directly in connection with the goods. The outer end of the tag A is bent at right angles to the main body portion, and forms a face, a, for the cost and sale (No model.)
price, and is held in this position by suitable means, which will be presently described.
Extending down ashort distance of the edges of the body A and entirely binding the edges of the cost and sale face a, and extending across the under side of the tag, as shown, a binding-strip, a", of thin metal, is provided, which acts as a support for the bent edge c and keeps the cost and sale price face a in the position shown in Fig. 1, and also acts to stiiien that portion of the body of the tag whereit it is most likely to be broken. By having the end face, a, bound in the manner dcscribed, and extending along a portion of the edge of the main body, a buckling of the tag is prevented As illustrated in Fig. 2, a hook or knob, a, is attached to the bent portion of the edge, which aids in drawing the tag from the folds of the cloth whenever a sale to be made,
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3 a form of the tag is shown wherein it is proposed to cover the face with a coating of some suitable substance-as celluloid or plastic slate which will allow erasure therefrom of the inventory marks, and render it in a condition to be used any number of times, as the goods in which it has been previously placed shall have been sold.
It is obvious that this device can with equal efficiency be made entirely of metahcoated or faced, and I propose to manufacture the tags in such manner.
Many minor details of design can be applied to the tag without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an article of manufacture, a markingtag consisting of a main strip having aseries of inventory spaces on its face, a supplementary piece, preferably integral. with the main strip, and bent at right angles thereto, and a re-enforcing support to hold said parts in their relative positions to each other, substantially as described.
2. In a marking-tag, the combination of a main strip having inventory-spaces on its face, a supplementary piece, preferably arranged at right angles to the main strip, and a re-enforcing strip or strips extending over the angle angle and onto the main and supplementary 10 and onto the main and supplementary parts, parts, to hold them in their relative positions, to hold them in their relative positions, subsubstantially as described.
stantially as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 3. In a marking-tag, the combination of a presence of two witnesses. main strip, A, having inventory-spaces a on JOSEPH P. PRESLEY. its face, a supplementary piece, a, arranged \Vitnesses:
