3` Claims.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a bookmark primarily intended for use by book readers which may be applied to and removed from the cover of a book without mutilation thereof, and which is capable of long life from one book to another. i
A further feature of the invention is to provide a bookmark which is capable of being made of precious metals as an expensive personal article, or which may be made of inexpensive materials containing indicia and distributed lfor advertising good-will purpose.
Other features of the invention will become apparent as the following specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a book showing my bookmark in use thereon.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3-is a vertical transverse sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bookmark per se.
Figure 5 is a collective perspective view of the bookmark with the parts in separated relation and illustrating a modified form of clamp.
Figure 6 is a front elevation of the marker with an advertising sign thereon.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, and at present to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the numeral Ill designates a bookmark in its entirety which is constructed in accordance with my invention. The book mark III includes a clamp II which is formed from a length of resilient material, such as steel, brass, or the same may be made of plastic or Celluloid. The clamp II includes confronting jaws I2 and I3 which are connected together by a loop I4. The free ends of .i g the jaws I2 and I3 are outwardly flared to facilimtate their easy insertion upon the cover of a book,
(c1. nsf-11e) the freeI end of the iavt I2 extending beyond the plane of the free end of its companion jaw I3.. integrallyconnected with the jaw t3y and extending at substantially right angles to the clamp- Il, is; a flat arm I5. Slidably mounted upon the arm I5 is.` an extension member I6.. the same besing `of at'tubular shape in cross' section toy re-v ceive the arm I5.. The top Wall of the exten-i sion mem-ber I6 is provided with an elongated` slot t1, the same being `closed at its inner end and open at the outer end of the extension member. A stop lug I3 is bent up from the free end of the arm I5 and extends into the slot for engagement with the closed end thereof for limiting the outward sliding movement of the extension member |16 relative to the arm I5.
Slidably carried by the extension member I6 is a carrier I9 in the form of a clip which embraces the extension member I9 but which is clear of the slot I'I. Depending from the outer end of the carrier I9 is a flange 29, the same terminating in an eye 2I for hingedly receiving a marker 22. The marker 22 is in the form of a wire bail with the terminal ends disposed in the eye 2|. YThe outer end of the extension :member I6 is provided with a downwardly extending stop lug 23 for limiting the outward sliding movement of the carrier I9 relative to the extension member In practice, assume that the bookmark I0 is to be applied to a book in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing'. The clamp II is inserted over the rear cover approximately centrally of its width with the arm I5, extension member I6 and carrier I9 extending inwardly from the clamp and clear of the top pages of the book. If the book is relatively thick, the extension member I6 is pulled out relative to the arm I5 so` that the carrier I9 will lie'on a plane substantially the same as the page to be marked as best illustrated in Figure 2. Further outward adjustmentmay be obtained by sliding the carrier I9 relative to the extension member I6. After the bookmark has been clamped to the rear cover as just, explained, the marker 22 will lie between two pages of the book and as a page is turned, the marker 22 will swing outwardly as illustrated in Figure 2 bythe dotted lines and after the page clears the marker, the marker will drop by gravity to mark the next adjacent page. As the thickness of the remaining pages decreases, the carrier I9 may be slid toward the clamp as also may be the extension member I6. Thus it will be seen that a person reading a novel or other form of book from cover to cover may IB is the carrier I9 to which the marker 2 2 ,is hingedly connected.
In Figure 6 of the drawing, the marker 2,2 has a sign plate 24 fixed thereto 4and on which advertising matter may appear. Thus itwill -be ap-f preciated that the book mark may be made `up and distributed for good-will advertising purposes, the advertisement' appearing in view during the reading of a book. Y y
While I have shown and described what I consider to be the most practical embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be `understood that such changes in-construction and design as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, wlat I member I6 and slidable on the extension member e. ,j
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patr ent of the United States, is:
y l. A bookmark comprising a clamp, a rigid arm connected to and extending substantially at right angle to said clamp, an extension member slidably mounted on said arm, a carrier slidably mounted on said extension member, and a marker hingedly connected to said carrier.
2. A bookmark as set forth in claim 1, including stop means for limiting the sliding movement of the extension member in a directionoutwardly away from the clamp, and stop means for limiting the sliding movement of the carrier in a direction outwardly relative to said extension member.
3. A bookmark comprising a clamp, a rigid arm y integral LAwith said clamp and extending at an angle relative thereto, an elongated extension meme ber slidably mounted on said arm and having a slot lengthwise thereof which is closed at its inner end, a stop lug adjacent the free end of said arm extending into said slot for engagement with the closed end thereof for limiting the outward sliding movement of the extension member relativeito said arm, a carrier slidably mounted on said extension member, stop means on the extension member for limiting the outward sliding movement of the carrier relative to the extension' `member, and a marker hingedly connected to said carrier.
