Description
Sept. 14, 1948;
E. POLAK BOOKMARK Filed Dec. 11, 1945 INVENTOR Emil PolL/f AO.RN EY provements in a book mark.
Patented Sept. 1.4, 1948 BOOKMARK f M EmilPolak Woodside, Long Islandg Ni m;
"This invention relate-s qto -new:-an'd useful im The invention has for object the construc- =tin of'a b ook mark -which is characterized by an inverted U 'sh'aped' resilient stri-p adapted to -be engaged on the top portion of the back of the binding'of a book and at its top end having a forwardly projectingsection, atop strip associated with said U-shaped strip "and section in a certain mannenand amark properassociated' with the top strip.
More specifically, it is contemplated to hingedly mount the top strip on the rear of the U-shaped striplanii to provide it with a iiaw portionengage Still further it is contemplated to provide the top strip with a horizontal forwardly extending end portion, and to provideau -shaped strip pivctally mounted at its ends upon"said forwardly extending portion and to pivotally depend the mark proper from the outer end of the U-shaped strip.
Still further the invention contemplates the provision of an auxiliary strip on the top strip engageable with one arm of the U-shaped strip for frictionally holding the latter in various positions.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a book with a book mark mounted thereon and constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of Fig. 1 showing the 'book mark in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the book shown in Fig. 1 opened up and with the book mark proper pulled out and swung backwards.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged elevational view of a portion of the book mark looking in the direction of the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a book mark constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention.
The book mark in accordance with this invention, includes an inverted U-shaped strip IU of resilient material having a front arm and a rear arm III. This U-shaped strip is adapted Application December 11, 1e45,S'erialfN6IG34L'I7'Z 2Olaims; curiae-r199 i ftOpngage'upOntHe top portion of the b'ack' of the "Binding "I?! ofeflb 'fifillfi l L- 'FheTI-Ofit' ar'ih F e 1s shorter than the-*rear arm fiil Th'ese arms havetheir-bottom ends formediwit esued c pbrt'ions I25" respectively} d-irected inwards and "calculated to more fiimly 5/ grip andf'enlga'jge the binding of the book: "The-ffont 'ariii lll is provide'd Witha -forward1y-prbjecnng section a at "its top which is J adapted when pressed rear- 10 "wardstoioenthearms =1 8W 6 togethenupo'n Theselugs l'd-areidrmed itite terial .of the U-shaped strip. The top strip I4 is also provided with a forwardly extending end portion l lc extending forwards from the jaw portion 14 A substantially U-shaped strip 18 is pivotally mounted at the ends of its arm-s upon the forwardly extending end portion |4 by a. pintle I9. The arms of the U-shaped strip l8 engage respectively above and below the end portion of the forwardly extending end portion M The pintle I9 engages through these three parts.
A marker proper 2B pivotally depends from the outer end of the U-shaped portion of the U- shaped strip l8. This mark proper comprises a fiat piece of material 211 mounted upon the bottom end of a relatively thin stem 20 This stem extends into a slot 2| formed in the bend of the U-shaped strip It. The inner end of the stem 20 is provided with a spherical head 20 which forms a bearing by which the mark proper 29 may be pivoted upwards and downwards. The mark proper 20 may move from the vertical position illustrated in Fig. 2 upwards substantially to a horizontal position above the pages Ill of the book H.
The operation of the device is as follows:
In Figs. 1 and 2 the book mark is shown in actual use. The mark proper 20 may be engaged between difierent pages merely by pivoting it upwards above the top edges of the pages II and then swivelling the U-shaped strip Hi to the right or left, as desired, and allowing the mark proper 20 to then move downwards into its new position. The book mark may be removed from the book by 55 first pivoting the top strip l4 upwards so that its jaw portion I4 disengages from th forwardly projecting section Ill of the U-shaped strip 10,
Fig. 3 illustrates the parts in this position. Now the U-shaped strip l0 may be pulled off the binding I l f the book. Y
In Fig. 5 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that the top strip [4 has a bottom continuation M continuing from the pivot l5 frontwise and extending over the top of the U-shaped strip l0 and continuing into a jaw portion H disposed directly beneath and engaged by the jaw portion M The jaw portion M engages over and holds the forwardly projecting portion Ill". The jaw portion M supplements the holding action of the jaw portion M A forwardly extending end portion M continues from the jaw portion l 4 and extends to a position directly beneath the bottom arm of the U-shaped strip l8. Afpiece of friction material 22 is cemented upon the top face of the end portion l4 and frictionally engages the bottom face of the bottom arm of the U-shaped strip l8 for frictionally holding the U-shaped strip I8 in various pivoted positions upon the pintle rivet Hi. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
A feature of this form of the invention resides in the fact that the U-shaped strip 18 is not loose,
in that it is frictionally held by the forwardly exis reserved to all changes and modifications coming' within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patents is:
1. A book mark comprising a U-shaped member providing opposing material gripping jaws having terminals spaced longitudinally from each other and provided with curled ends adapted to engage a book part, said U-shaped member having a loop on the bend part thereof, hinge lugs secured to said member inwardly of said loop, a lever pivoted to said lugs and provided with a loop engaging the loop of the member to close said jaws against a EMIL POLAK.
