END HOOK.
Application filed-June 26, 1828. Serial No. 288,481.-
This invention relates-to a Watch strap end member or so'called end hook for connecting the strap to the lug of a wrist watch; and
has for its object to provide a simple andeffective connection between the watch strap and the end member such that end members oi varying widths to fit the varying widths of-watch lugs may be interchanged,as desired.
Y A further object of the invention is the proto vision of a detachable connection between the end member and the wrist watch strapwhereby by manual manipulation, the end member may be removed and an end member of a'different width may be substituted therefor.
This invention further consists in the provision of a spring pin which yieldingly engages openings in the end member and may be io rced against the yielding action of the spring to disengage the pin from the end member.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a wrist watch with the end member attached thereto and mounted in position on the ends of a watch stra Figure 2 is a bottom View partially in section illustrating the connection of thestrap to the end member.
Figure 3 is a bottom view showing the tip on the strap with theresiliently mounted 'trunnions extending therefrom;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the attaching Figure 5 is a sectional view of the tip on the strap. 7
Figure 6 is a sectional view showing the securing of the tip to the strap;
Fi ure 7 's a perspective view of the end mem r formed with a hook.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a modified form of end member shown with a loop for attaching the same to the lug of .a wrist watch.
Wristwatches have lugs of varying widths depending. upon their style which necessitate the use of strap end members of varying or adjustable widths to attach the strap thereto, andin order that different widths of end "members may be readily attached to the end of a wrist watch strap, I have provided a con- I struction by which the connection between the I and 2.6 in the side walls.
strap and the end member is such that this attachment and detachment may be readily accomplished, and the means which I have herein shown is such that by manual manipulation of the pin with such instruments as a hat pin or the like the detachment is readily eifected; and the following is a detailed de-' scription oi. the present embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
' With reference to the drawings, 10 designates a wrist watch having lugs 11 between which extends a cross bar, hidden in the showing of Figure 1, which may be either re- 7 movable or'rigid, as desired.
A strap 12 is provided with a tip 13 consisting of plates 14 and 15 joined together by an eye 16. The plates 14 and 15 are firmly clamped onto the end of the strap 12 by 7 means of fingers 17 secured to the plate 15 being bent over the opposite plate 1 1 and a flange 18 which may be serrated if desired to bite into the strap 12, as illustrated in Figure 5, to more firmly secure the tip in position. 1
The end member, illustrated in perspective in Figure 5, comprises a vbody portion. 19 formed channel shape in cross section with a top plate 20 and side walls 21 and 22. This top plate 20 is extended to form a hook 23, as
illustrated in Figure 7 or it may be bent into a complete loop 24 as illustrated in Figure .8, the'hook being used for attachment where the cross bar of the wrist watch lug is rigid with thewatch while the loop formed, as illustrated in Figure 8, may be used where the cross bar of the wrist watch lug is removable permitting insertion of the loop between the portions of the lug extending outwardly from the watch for attaching the tip and the strap 05 to the end member 19. v
The eye 16 is positioned between the aligned openings 25 and 26 in the walls 21 and 22 of the end member and a suitable pin is passed through these openings and eye to secure the same in osition. The pm which I utilize in this construction has an outer tubular shell 27 with trunnions 28 extending from either end thereof and pressed outwardly by spring 29 against the inturned ends 30 'of'the shell, the movement being'limited by a shoulder 31 on the trunnions formed by the reduced end 32 thereof which is of a size to snugly fit the openings 25 It will, of course, be apparent that in using the pin illustrated in Figure 4 in attaching the tip to the end member that the pin with its resilient trunnion is positioned in the eye 16 and then the eye with the pin thus positioned is placed between the walls 21 and 22 with the trunnions pressed inwardly and then the tip ismoved into such position that the trunnions will snap through openings 25 and 26 and securely lock the same in position. The tip may be detached by pushing the trunnions inwardly with a hat pin or other sharp instrument to disengage them from the openings 25 and 26 and a substitute end member may be attached.
The pin is hidden from view by the base portion 20 of the end member extending thereover with its side flanges 22 extending CERTIFICATE Patent No. 1,701,339.
warren J. ROY.
1. In combination with a wrist watch strap, a-tip having an eye therein mounted on the end of the strap, an end member adapted to be secured to the lug of a wrist watch, comprising a body havin a continuous extending base, spaced side danges extending therefrom for a substantial distance along the side edges of the base and having aligned openings, said tip being positioned with its eye between said aligned openingsand a pin extending through said eye and openings to attach said tip and member together, said pin being concealed by said base beneath which it extends. v
2. In combination with a wrist watch strap, a tip having an eye therein mounted on the end of the strap, an end member adapted to be secured to the lug of a wrist watch comprising a body having spaced side walls with aligned openings, a pin having outwardly sprin pressed trunnions mounted in the eye of said tip, with said trunnions extending into said openings andresiliently removable therefrom to detach the tip from said end members.
