To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL (hears, a citizen of the United Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps or Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally, to improvements in .clasps or buckles; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed, as well as an ornamental device, in the form of a clasp or a buckle, which is especially adapted for use with the usual ribbons, such as are employed with wrist-watches, but which may also be used in other various manners.

The present invention has for its principal object to provide a clasp or buckle, comprising a pair of separable clasp or buckle-members, with one of which an end-portion of a ribbon, or the like, is adapted to be connected, the other clasp or buckle-member being slidably and adjustably mounted upon another portion of the ribbon, or the like, and the two clasp or buckle-members being adapted to be snapped into retaining engagement with one another, for maintaining the ribbon in its position about the wrist, when used in connection with a wrist-watch, or the like, or when employed as a buckle, in connection with a belt, for maintaining the belt in its position about the body of the wearer.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, inthe novel clasp or buckle hereinafter set fourth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in States, residing at Serial No. 676,485.

Figure 3 represents face views, showing collectively, the separated members of the clasp or buckle, illustrating more particularly one manner of attaching the ornamental faceplate of the clasp or buckle to, an end-portion of the ribbon, and also showing the slidable and adjustable arrangement of the back-plate of the clasp or buckle upon another portion of the ribbon.

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional representation of the clasp or buckle and the ribbon, said section being represented as being taken on line H in said Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a rear face view of the backplate of the clasp or buckle, showing in connection with said plate, one arrangement of a post or stud-engaging spring; and Figure 6 is a perspective view of the spring shown in said Figure 5 in connection with the said back-plate.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the complete clasp or buckle for use with a ribbon 2, or the like, in a manner to be presently set forth.

The clasp or buckle comprises an ornamental face-plate,as 3, which is preferably outwardly convexed, substantially as indicated in Figure 4 of the drawings, the said plate being provided at one edge with an extension 4, forming with said edge of the face-plate, a laterally extending slot or opening, as 5. As shown in said Figure 4, an end-portion, as 6, of the ribbon 2, is passed into and through the slot or opening 5, forming a loop 7 about the said extension or bar 4, the looped portions of the ribbon being suitably secured together by sewwardly projecting and ing, or otherwise. Projecting rearwardly from the hack of the face-plate 3 is a laterally extending spring-engaging member or rib, the outer and enlarged edge-portion 8 of which is suitably connected with said back 0;? the face-plate by means of a restricted portion 9, substantially as shown in said Figure i, and for the purpose to jbe presently more fully described.

The said backplate is also formed with a laterally extending opening or slot 19,2of such width that the enlarged portion 8 of the spring-engaging member or rib of the face-plate may readily enter the said opeing or slot 19, for snapped engagement with the

V 7 Referring to Figure l of the drawings, it will be seen that the said back-plate is slidably and adjustably mounted upon the ribbon, by having the end-portion 25 of the ribbon passed over the bar 15 into and through the opening or slot 17, and back of the said back-plate, then into and through the opening or slot 18 and over the bar 16, whereby the back-plate is held by frictional engagement with the ribbon, against movement thereon, as will be clearly evident.

Such adjustment having been made, it will be readily understood, that the faceplate of the clasp or buckle can be easily snapped into its holding relation with and laterally extending eeneee over the back-plate, and can just as readily or be put to other uses, as clasps'for garters, and the like.

i am also aware, that changes maybe made in the general arrangements and combinations oi the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing g from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit any present invention to th exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do confine myself to the exact details or", the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim 1. A clasp or buckle comprising a faceplate provided at one edge with means for attachment thereto of an end-portion of a ribbon, belt, or the like, a spring-engaging lug extending laterally across a portion of the rear face or" said face-plate and also projecting rearwardly from said plate, said lug having an enlarged marginal portion and a restricted portion between said enlarged portion and the rear face of the plate, combined with a back-plate, provided with marginal bars and laterally extending slots for adjustably" mounting the back-plate upon another portion of the ribbon, belt, or the like, the said back-plate being provided with a laterally extending opening for reception of said spring-engaging lug, retaining lugs extending rearwardly from the longitudinally extending edges of the backplate, and a spring between said lugs and held by said lugs upon the back of said backplate, said spring having bowed portions lyiug directly back of said opening with which the restricted portion of the spring-engaging lug is adapted to be brought into separable holdiug engagement.

2. A clasp or buckle comprising a face plate provided at one of its laterally extending edges with a marginal bar and a laterally extending slot for attachment thereto of an end-portion of a ribbon, belt, or the like, a spring-engaging lug extending laterally across a portion of the rear face of said face-plate and projecting rearwardly from said plate, said lug having an enlarged marginal portion and a restricted mg in the foregoing description of the E portion between said enlarged portion and the rear face of the plate, combined with a back-plate, means connected with said backplate for adjustably mounting the same upon another portion of the ribbon, belt, or the like, the said back-plate being provided with a laterally extending opening for reception of said spring-engaging lug, and a spring mounted upon the back of said back-plate, said spring having bowed portions lying directly back of said opening with which the restricted portion of the spring-engaging lug is adapted to be brought into separable holding engagement.

3. A clasp or buckle comprising a faceplate provided at one of its laterally extending edges with a marginal bar and a laterally extending slot for attachment thereto of an end-portion of a ribbon, or the like, a spring-engaging lug extending laterally across a portion of the rear face of said face-plate and projecting rearwardly from said plate, said lug having an enlarged marginal portion and a restricted portion between said enlarged portion and the rear face of the plate, combined with a backplate, provided with marginal bars and laterally extending slots for adjustably mounting the back-plate upon another portion of the ribbon, belt, or the like, the said back-plate being provided with a laterally extending opening for reception of said spring-engaging lugs, retaining lugs extending rearwardly from the longitudinally extending edges of the back-plate, and a spring between said lugs and held by said lugs upon the back of said backplate, said spring having bowed portions lying directly back of said opening with which the restricted portion of the springengaging lug is adapted to be brought into separable holding engagement.
