This invention relates to article retaining means and has for one object thereof to provide a combined necktie and shirt holder.

Another object of the invention is to provide a necktie holder or clasp having means carried thereby for attachment to trousers or other nether garments for holding the front of the shirt in position and to prevent upward movement thereof. I

Another object of the invention is to provide a necktie clasp of one piece resilient construction and designed to be easily attached to and removed from the shirt and necktie and when attached to be securely held in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a necktie clasp of such construction that is well adapted to be provided with means for holding the front of the shirt in place.

A yet further object of the invention is generally to provide a necktie clasp of improved construction and appearance.

The above objects of the invention and other objects which might hereinafter appear will be fully understood from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing which, however, are to be considered as illustrative of the invention and not in limitation thereof.

I Referring now to the drawing in detail, the combined necktie and shirt holder of the present invention comprises a necktie clasp l0 and a shirt holder l2 which is attached to said clasp and is carried thereby in depending relation therefrom. The necktie clasp is preferably provided with a flexible chain or similar element [4 adapted to engage over the front of the necktie for holding the latter in position.

Referring first to the construction of the necktie clasp In, the latter comprises in integral relation a front bar [6 or clasping member provided with a longitudinally extending slot l8 disposed between narrow edge portions 18a and l8b, a back bar 20 provided with a longitudinally extending slo t'22 and resiliently connected at one end thereof to said front bar by the U-shaped or reflexedend portions 24 integral with said front and back bars and disposed at .opposite sides of the slots l8 and 22 therein. 24a and 24b continuous with end portions 24. Back bar 20 beyond curved end portions 24 projects toward the rear surface of front bar l6 and has an end portion 26 which engages or lies -close to the rear surface of front bar I6. A

clasping member 28 is struck out from back bar 20, in integral relation with end portion 26 thereof. Said clasping member 28 extends'longitudinally of the front bar l6 between the latter and resilient member 20 and extends within slot I8, as illustrated in Fig. 5. The free end portion 30 of clasping member 28 is rearwardly curved, as is end portion 26 of member 20, to facilitate the attachment and detachment of the clasp from the shirt and necktie. It will be understood that member 28 is formed by slotting the part of the blank which forms back bar 20. Front bar 16 and clasping member 28 constitute companion clasping members which'slidably engage the parts clamped therebetween so that the claspcan be attached and removed by sliding the same to and from attached position.

In the construction thus far described, it is apparent that back bar 28 is resiliently connected to front bar i6 by end portions 24 whereby the latter resiliently oppose the movement of end portion 26 away from the rear surface of front bar 16. Said end portions 24 resiliently hold said end portion 26 in engagement with or close to the rear surface of said front bar. Also in this construction the clasping member 28 is held resiliently by end portion 26 toward front bar I6 whereby the movement of'said clasping member 28 rearwardly away from front bar I6 is resiliently opposed. Clasp [0 may be made of any suitable metal or other material whereby the structure is inherently resilient as just described. Front bar I6 is" provided with an end strip projection 32 which is formed by striking the same from the blank in forming the curved portions 24. The other end of front bar [6 is provided with an eyelet 34, the ends of chain l4 being attached to strip 32 and eyelet 34. It will be observed, particularly by reference to Fig. 6, that when necktie clasp I0 is attached to the shirt S and to the necktie N, the latter are engaged between front bar I6 and clasping member 28 for substantially the full length of said clasping member and that the clasped portions of the shirt and necktie are thereof toward the front bar l8 whereby to improve the grip of clasping member 28, and front bar I on the clamped parts of the shirt and necktie. It will be understood that the front part of the necktie need not be clamped as it is held in position by the chain I4. In other words, front bar I8 of the necktie clasp I is positioned between the front and rear parts or flaps of the necktie while the rear part of the necktie and the underlying portion of the shirt is secured between clasping member 28 and front bar I6.

Referring now to the shirt holder member I2 which is carried by necktie clasp l0, said shirt holder member comprises a link which is preferably elastic and which, for this purpose, is conveniently although not necessarily constituted by one or more elastic cords 36. The link constituted as here shown by said cords is provided at its lower end with a loop 38 for engagement with the top button B of the trousers or other nether garment. Said link includes an end attaching member 40 formed-of metal and having a part 42 bent over and secured to the lower edge portion Ila of front bar l6 midway of the length of said front bar. Attaching member 40 may, if desired, be soldered to said front bar so that it is rigid therewith or the bent over portion 42 of said end attaching member may be left unsoldered to provide, if desired, a pivotal connection between said end attaching member and the necktie clasp. It will be understood that the link here shown as constituted by the elastic cords 36 may be constituted instead by a metallic band or chain which is also preferably flexible and elastic so that it can automatically expand and contract in length depending on thetension thereon when the device is attached to the shirt and to the nether garment.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the latter is capable of other specific embodiments which will suggest themselves in view of the present disclosure. It'will be understood also that in the illustrated embodiment certain changes in the details of construction and in the arrangement of parts may be made and that while the necktie clasp I0 is specially designed in accordance with the present invention to carry a shirt holder in association therewith, said necktie clasp may be used without the shirt holder. Numerous other changes, modifications, and adaptations of the underlying idea of the present invention will occur to skilled artisans. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited precisely to the form of the invention as herein shown or described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A retaining device of the class described comprising a clasp having a first clasping member, provided with a longitudinally extending slot, said clasping member having a refiexed end portion, a member integral with said reflexed end portion extending longitudinally of said clasping member toward the other end thereof whereby said members are resiliently connected, and a second clasping member struck out from said second mentioned member and positioned between the latter and said first clasping member for clasping a part of an article therebetween in engagement with said slotted part of said first said other end thereof. to said first mentioned end of the first clasping member in position to clasp a part of an article between said two clasping members in engagement with the slotted part of said first clasping member.

3. A retaining device of the class described constituting combined necktie clasp and shirt holder comprising clasping members constructed and arranged to slidably engage a necktie part and a shirt part therebetween, and a link member comprising an elastic cord, chain or the like connected to one of said clasping members and depending therefrom and provided at its lower end with means for engagement with part of a nether garment thereby to retain the front of the shirt in position against upward movement.

4. A retaining device of the class described comprising a clasp having a first clasping member, a member resiliently connected at one end thereof to one end of said clasping member and movable at its other end toward and away from said clasping member, a second clasping member extending between and longitudinally of said first mentioned members and urged resiliently toward said first clasping member by said resiliently connected member, and an elastic link connected to and extending transversely of said clasping members and provided with means for engaging a part of an article to hold the part of the article engaged by said clasping members in relatively fixed position in relation to said first mentioned article part.

5. A retaining device of the class described comprising a clasp having a first clasping member, a member resiliently connected at one end thereof to one end of said clasping member and movable at its other end toward and away from said clasping member, a second clasping member extending between and longitudinally of said first mentioned members and urged resiliently toward said first clasping member by said resiliently connected member, and an elastic link connected to and extending transversely of said clasping members mid-way between the ends of the latter and provided with means for engaging a part of. an article to hold the part of the article engaged by said clasping members in relatively fixed position in relation to said first mentioned article part.

6.- A retaining device of the class described comprising a clasp having a first clasping member, provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a second clasping member for gripping a clasped part in engagement with the first clasping member in said slot thereof, means for resiliently urging said second clasping member toward said first clasping member to releasably hold said part in said engagement, and a link connected to the edge of the first clasping member at one side of the slot therein and extending transversely thereof for engaging a part of an article to hold the part of the article engaged by saidclasping members in. relatively fixed position in relation to said first mentioned article part.
