To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and.

. to letters of reference marked thereon, which device in addition to the pin for attachment to the garment whereby the badge may be used, in the manner of an easel, as an ornament upon the mantel or a table in the room when the badge is not worn upon the garment.

The invention therefore has for its principal object the production of a novel badge and a novel means of attachment connected with its back-plate combining a pin for the attachment of the badge to the garment and an easel stand or frame connected with said pin, whereby the badge may be used for other purposes than that of attachment to the garment of a person.

The invention has for its further object to provide a novel construction of pin for the attachmeut of the badge to the garment, and, furthermore, the novel arrangement and construction of the parts of said pin combined with the back-plate of the badge all being arranged so that the pin will be retained in its proper and rigid position against the back of the badge, whereby a practical, simple, and cheap, as \vellas ornamental, badge is the result,which can be used for various ornamental purposes and which is of such construction that the various parts can be easily and set forth in the accompanying specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which form a part of this specification. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a rear or back View of a badgebutton embodying the principles of my present invention, said view illustrating the general arrangement of the pin for attaching the badge to a garment and an easel frame or support connected with said pin whereby the badge-button may be employed for other or* namental purposes. Fig. 2 is an edge or side view of the combined badge-button and easel. Fig. 3 is a View of the inner surface of the backplate of the badge -button, illustrating the position of the main body of the pin against the same provided with a means which prevents the turning of the pin against the face of said back-plate and retains the said pin in its rigid and operative position for attachment of the badge-button to the garment. Fig. 4 is a rear or back view of the badgebutton and its pin with the easel attachment or supporting-frame detached from its position on the pin. In the said drawings, a indicates the usual form of button-shaped shell of the badgebutton; but it will be understood that said shell may be of any other desirable shape and configuration of outline. This shell or body a is provided with an inwardly-projecting marginal rim or bead a. The face of the said shell may be covered with a flexible or other suitable covering a which may be provided with any suitable inscription, emblem, design, or picture. The annular edge a of said cover is arranged over and underneath the said marginal rim or bead a, where it is firmly held in place against the inner surrounding surface of the said marginal rim or bead, as represented in Figs. 5 and 9, by means of pressure and heat during the process of securing the said covering a of the body or shell a. When the badge-button is to be used in the manner of an easel, a supporting-frame, as 9, may be employed with the said pin-bar,- substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 5. This supporting frame consists, preferably, of a pair of arms e and e and a connecting footpiece c The said arm e is provided at its free end with a ring-shaped end or loop forming an eye c and the arm e? is provided at its free end with a similar ring-shaped end or loop forming an eye a substantially as shown. When the pointed portion of the pin (1 is disconnected from the holding loop or hook (F, then the eye 6 can be easily passed over the pin 61 and arranged over the rightangled portion or shank d as shown, and the eye a can be readily passed over the holding loop or book 01* and arranged over the part or shank d both eyes being retained in their operative positions in the manner of a hinge i against the outer face of the back-plate and the said pin d, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the said figures of the drawings. Thus it will be seen that the said supporting-frame 6 can be readily placed at an angle to the back of the badge-button, whereby the latter can be placed in the man ner of an easel or picture frame for ornamental purposes upon a table or mantel, and when the said supporting-frame e is closed against the back of the badge-button then the latter can easily be pinned upon the lapel or other part of a garment. If desired, the supporting-frame e can be detached from the pinbar, as clearly represented in Fig. 4, the several parts of the pin-bar which are arranged against the back or inner surface of the backplate serving as hearing portions for properly retaining the pin-bar in a rigid and operative position relative to the back of the badgebutton.

In some instances I may provide the backwith downwardly and inwardly extending tonguesf, thereby providing a suitably-constructed receiving-socket at each end of the frame f, as clearly illustrated in Figs. '7, 8, l

and 9. These receiving-sockets are arranged in the openings 0 and 0 of the back-plate c 1 in such a manner that their upper parts, and

more especially the central parts f will project beyond the outer face of the said backplate c. Into these receiving-sockets of the said frame f I have arranged the respective curved ends d and d of the pin-bar d, one of said curved ends, as cl, being formed with a rearwardly-curved part (1, which terminates in a pin d, having a pin-point 01 The other curved end al of the pin-bar d is formed with a retaining loop or hook d, beneath which the pointed end portion of the pin d can be secured in the manner of the ordinary safety-pin, as clearly illustrated. This form of pin-bar d thus employed in connection with the framef may or may not be used with the supporting-frame e. (Representedin Fig. 7.) When the supporting-frame e is employed with this pin-bar, the arm 6 is formed with a suitable loop or hook c and the arm e is formed with a similar loop or hook e both of which can be arranged around the pin-bar d, as clearly illustrated in said Fig. 7, and whereby this badge-button can be worn either as a badge upon a garment or can be placed upon a table or mantel in the manner of the ordinary easel or picture frame.

From the above description it will be clearly evident that I have devised a neat and simply-constructed pin attachment for badges and badge-buttons, and, furthermore, I have produced a badge-button which when not in use on the garment of a person can be kept as a souvenir and placed in the manner of an easel or picture frame upon a table or mantel.

It will be obvious that changes can be made in the various arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of this invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the details of the construction of the several parts. It will also be evident that I may entirely discard the useof the easel or supporting frame e, employing in connection with the badge-button merely the novel form and construction of pin-bar herein described.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is 1. In a badge, the combination, with a pin for attachment of the badge to a garment, said pin having supporting portions and shanks extending from said supporting portions, of a supporting-frame, and means on said supporting frame for attaching said frame to said shanks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a badge or button, a face-plate, a backplate secured to said face-plate, and a pin-bar connected with said back-plate, comprising a main body portion supporting portions connected with said body portion and bent at angles thereto, said body portion and supporting portions all lying in the sameplane parallel to the plane of the face of said back-plate, and bearing against the inner face of the backplate to prevent turning, shanks arranged at right angles to said supporting portions and extending at different points through the said back-plate, a pin-pointed bar on one of the said shanks, and a loop or hook on the other shank, with which said pin-pointed bar can be brought in holding engagement, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a badge or button, a face-plate, a backplate secured to said face-plate, and a pinbar connected with said back-plate, comprising a main body portion provided with supporting portions, saidbody portion and supporting portions all lying in the same plane parallel to the plane of the face of said backplate, shanks arranged at right angles to said supporting portions and extending at different points through the said back-plate, a pinpointed bar on one of the said shanks, and a loop or hook on the other shank, with which said pin-pointed bar can be brought .in hold ing engagement, and an easel-frame having a pair of eyes, each eye being arranged over a shank of said pin-bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4:. In a badge or button, a chambered faceplate, a back-plate and a filling in the chamber of said face-plate, a pin-bar connected with said back-plate, comprising a main body portion supporting portions, connected with said body portion and bent at angles thereto, said body portion and supporting portions all lying in the same plane parallel to the plane of the face of said back-plate, said main body portion and said supporting portions being arranged in direct and close supporting engagement with the contiguous faces of said back-plate and filling, and bearing against said faces to prevent turning between said parts, shanks arranged at right angles to said supporting portions and extending at different points through the said back-plate, a pinpointed bar on one of said shanks, and a loop or hook on the other shank, with which said pin-pointed bar can be brought in holding engagement, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a badge or button, a chambered face plate, a back-plate and a filling in the chamber of said face-plate, a pin-bar connected with said back-plate, comprising a main body portion provided with supporting portions, said body portion and supporting portions all lying in the same plane parallel to the plane of the face of said back-plate, said main body portion and said supporting portions being arranged in direct and close supporting engagement with the contiguous faces of said back-plate and filling, against turning between said parts, shanks arranged at right angles to said supporting portions and extending at different points through the said backplate, a pin-pointed bar on one of said shanks, and a loop or hook-on the other shank, with which said pin-pointed bar can be brought in holding engagement, and an easel-f ram e, comprising a supporting portion or leg, and a 'pair of eyes, each eye being pivotally arranged over a shank of said pin-bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a badge, a shell having a marginal rim or bead forming a chamber in the back thereof, a back-plate in said chamber and a pinbar connected with said back-plate, consisting, essentially, of a main body portion d, an upwardly-extending part at, bent at a right angle, or approximately so, to said main body portion, a curved portion d and an inwardlyextending part 61 at the other end of said main body portion, all arranged in the same plane passing through the central axis of said main body portion, the said parts at, d and d forming bearing portions arranged against said back-plate to prevent turning of the pin-bar, an outwardly-extending portion d formed at a right angle, or approximately so, to said part 01 and extending through a hole in said back-plate, an outwardly-extending portion 015 formed at a right angle, or approximately so, to said part d and extending through a hole in said back-plate, a pin having a pin-point connected with said portion (1 and a receiving loop or hook connected with said portion 01 beneath which a portion of said pin is sprung, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. In a badge, a shell having a marginal rim or bead forming a chamber in the back thereof, a back-plate and a filling in said chamber, and a pin-bar connected with said back-plate, consisting, essentially, of a main body portion (1, an upwardly-extending part 01', bent at a right angle to said main body portion, or approximately so, a curved portion d and an inwardly-extending part d at the other end of said main body portion, all arranged in the same plane passing through the central axis of said main body portion, the said parts 01, d, d and d all being arranged between the filling and said back-plate, and said parts (1, d and d forming bearing portions to prevent turning of the pin-bar, an outwardly'extending portion 01 formed at a right angle, or approximatelyso, to said part d and extending through a hole in said back-plate, an outwardly-extending portion d formed at a right angle, or approximately so, to said part 01 and extending through a hole in said backplate, a pin having a pin-point connected with said portion (1 and a receiving loop or hook connected with said portion 01 beneath which a portion of said pin is sprung, substantially as-and for the purposes set forth.

8. The herein-described pin-bar for a badge, consisting, essentially, of a main body portion d, an upwardly-extending part at, bent at a right angle to said main body portion, or approximately so, a curved portion d and an inwardly-extending part d at the other end of said main body portion, all arranged in the same plane passing through the central axis of said main body portion, and a shank extending at a right angle, or approximately so, from each part d and d in planes at right angles to the plane of said body portion d and said parts d and d", and a pin provided with a pin-point connected with one of said righta-ngled shanks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

9. The herein desoribed pin-bar for a badge, consisting, esssentially, of a main body portion d, an upwardly-extending part (1, bent at a right angle to said main body portion, or approximately so, a curved portion d and an inwardly-extending part 01* at the other end of said main body portion, all arranged in the same plane passing through the central axis of said main body portion, an outwardly-extending portion (1 formed at a right angle, or approximately so, to said part (1, an outwardly-extendingportion d formed at a right angle, or approximately so, to said part 01*, a pin having a pin-point connected with said portion 01 and a receiving loop or hook connected with said portion (1 beneath which a portion of said pin is sprung, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

10. In a badge, the combination, with a pin for attachment of the badge to a garment, said pin having supporting portions and shanks extending at right angles from said supporting portions, of a supporting-frame provided with eyes pivotally arranged over the shanks of said pin, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

11. In a badge, the combination, with a pin for attachment of the badge to a garment, said pin having supporting portions and shanks extending at right angles from said supporting portions, of a supporting-frame, comprising a pair of arms e and 6 and an eye on each arm pivotally arranged over the shanks of said pin, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

12.
