To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILFRED AMBROSE VVILSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cufl'-Links, Studs, Solitaires, Tie Ornaments, and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved device for use as a cult link, stud, solitaire and the like fastening devices of the type formed in two parts adapted to be interlocked and has for its object an improved construction of such devices which permits the parts of the device to be used as a cuif link or the like, or one part to be removed.

According to the invention the device is formed in two parts, adapted to be inter locked one with the other, one or each of said parts being provided with a removable plate or carrier adapted to be used separately as a tie ornament, while one or both of said parts may be utilized as part of a stud or the like.

The removable plates or carriers may each be providedwith tongues, pins or pointed projections to enable the carrier to be clenched into the material of the tie or with scalloped or perforated edges to enable the same to be secured to the tie by threads or the like.

In a typical construction according to the invention, the device comprises two parts adapted to be interlocked when used as a cufl' link. The one part forming a socket member is provided with a double key or other slot at one end to receive the other part forming a locking member. The looking member is provided with tongues projecting on opposite sides of its shank which tongues and shank form a snug fit in the slot of the socket member. The tongues pass into a chamber the socket member and their outer surfaces are provided with pro ecting points or spherical heads which engage a rubber or other dially slotted springy plate so as to trictionally retain the locking member in the locked position.

The outer endsoi the socket and locking member have attached thereto a removable plat-c or carrier, which may be plain or ornamental and may be recessed or dished to receive an ornament, jewel, or the like, while the edges may be perforated or scalloped to enable the same to be secured to the material of the tie by threads or wire or the edges may be provided with tongues or pinsadapted to be bent over to .clench the material ofthe tieor to grip the outer edges of the; plates or buttons pivotally connected to the outer endsof the socket and locking members.

The two parts with the plate or carrier attached thereto may be interlocked for use as a cuff link or the locking member may be removed and form part of a stud, the other part of which comprises a separate socket member of suitable construction and having a double key hole slot similar to the socket member of the cuff link, while if desired, the plate or carrier removably attached to one of the members may be removed and attached to a tie for use as tie ornament. i

Referring to Figs. 1 to 6 the device consists of two parts comprising a socket member a and a locking member Z). The socket member a is preferably formed cylindrical at c terminating in an eye piece 6. The portion a is provided with a double key slot f extending longitudinally thereof. This slot is circular in the center and is provided with two radially disposed grooves or channels 7 arranged diametrically opposite one another.

The bottom of the slot terminates in a preferably cylindrical chamber or recess 9 within which is placed a pad or disk p of rubber or other suitable resilient material.

The locking member I) consists of a circular shank portion it having at one end two tongues or projections 76 the shank and tongues being of such size and shape as to form a sliding fit in the slot. The lower ends of the tongues are each provided with one or more spherical or; other suitably shaped projections or pin heads which when the two members are interlocked engage the surface of the resilient pad and prevent disengagement.

The end of the socket member at has secured thereto a plain or ornamented button, disk or plate Z preferably provided with an eye piece m, with which the eye piece 0 engages, thus permitting free universal movement of the disk Z. The opposite outer end of the locking member is provided with a spherical or other suitably shaped head a, through a hole in which passes a loop or eye 0 rigidly fixed to a plain or ornamental button or the like 0. g is a removable flanged plate or carrier the outer periphery of which is provided with tongues or pins 9 adapted to be bent over to grip the outer edges of the button 0 or the carrier may be removed from said button and used separately as a tie ornament, in which case the points g are clenched into the material of the tie, as desired. The plain or ornamental carrier 9 may be recessed or dished to receive an ornament, jewel or the like, while the edges may be scalloped and perforated as shown at 9 in Fig. 8, to enable the same to be secured to the tie or the like by threads or wire as will be readily understood.

The application of the invention to studs or solitaires is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. For this purpose a separate socket member a is hole.

Fig. 7 shows the two members a and I) used to form a connecting member for a chain or necklace. In this construction the plates Z and o are removed from the ends of the members a; and b respectively and the open links 29, t on the ends of the chain t are engaged with the eye piece 6 of the member a and with the hole in the ball n, at the outer end of the locking member 5.

Referring to Flgs. 9 and 10 which show a modified construction th socket member u comprises a hollow conical member formed from sheet metal with a hollow spherical portion a at one end. The portion a is provided with holes or perforations to enable the plate or disk Z to be attached thereto by means of the eye piece as shown. The locking member comprises a rod or shank portion a), one end of which is provided with a spherical head '0 which is slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the lipped open end a of the conical member a. The member a is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, the edges abutting at a so that when the spherical head 41 is forced into the open end thereof, the sides open out to permit the head to pass.

The construction of the stud according to Figs. 11 and 12 is similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with the exception that the pad 79 in the chamber 9 is replaced by a radially slotted and apertured plate 10 shown separately in Fig. 12.

The plate is clamped between the base plate a of the stud and an outer cover plate 8 which may be composed of a disk of ivory, bone, celluloid or any other suitable material. The plate is provided with a double-key-hole shaped aperture 10 corresponding to a similarly shaped slot in the shank portion. The locking member is provided with a spherical head 70 from which projects from diametrically opposite sides tongues or the like 16 snugly fitting said double key hole slot and aperture. The plate a is further provided with radially disposed cuts 10 so that when the locking member is inserted into the socket member the spherical head 10 which is slightly larger in diameter than that of the aperture w, the sectors of the plate formed by the radial cuts are e e so as t p nni the head to pass and afterward spring back to their normal position. The locking member is then partially rotated so that the two members are securely locked together.

It will be readily understood that the details of construction may be modified without departing from the principle of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

l. A device for use as a cuff link, stud, solitaire, tie ornament or similar fastening device formed in two parts adapted to be interlocked one with the other, both of said parts being connected together to form a 011% link and one of said parts being re movable from the other to form part of a stud, and at least one of said parts having removably mounted thereon a carrier adapted to be attached to a tie to serve as a tie ornament.

2. A device for use as a cut? link, stud, solitaire, tie ornament or similar fastening device comprising a socket member having removably and pivotally connected thereto at one end a plate and at the opposite end a double key hole slot terminating in a cylindrical chamber, a locking member having at one end a head formed with radial tongues forming a snug fit in the slot of said socket member and adapted when partially rotated to interlock therewith and at the opposite end a removable plate, at least one of said plates having removably attached thereto a carrier provided with means for attaching the same independently to a tie for use as a tie ornament.

3. A device for use as a cuff link, stud, solitaire, tie ornament or similar fastening device, comprising a socket member having removably and pivotally connected thereto at one end a plate, and at the opposite end a double key hole slotr terminating in a cylindrical chamber, a locking member having at one end a head formed with radial tongues forming a snug fit in the slot of the socket member and adapted when partially rotated in said slot to retain the parts in the interlocked position, a detachable and pivotal disk at the opposite end of said locking member, a carrier provided with means on its periphery for attaching the same to either of the plates of the socket and locking members, and for attaching the same to a tie for use independently, as a tie ornament.

4. A device for use as a cuff link, stud, solitaire, tie ornament Or other similar fastening device, comprising a socket member provided at one end with a detachable and pivotal plate, and at the opposite end with a double key hole slot terminating in an enlarged chamber, a pad of rubber within said chamber, a locking member formed at one end with a head having radial tongues forming a snug fit in said slot and chamber, spherical projections on said tongues adapted to frictionally engage said pad when the locking and socket members are interlocked, a removable and pivotal plate attached to the opposite end of said locking member, and a carrier adapted to be secured to either of said pivotal plates or to be attached to a tie for use as a tie ornament.

5. A device for use as a cufi link, stud, solitaire, tie ornament or other similar fastening device formed in two parts adapted to be interlocked one with the other, both of said parts being connected together to form a cuff link, and one of said parts being removable from the other to form part of a stud after being afiixed to a tie by passing the same through a hole therein, and one end of the part attached to the tie, having removably connected thereto a carrier serving as a tie ornament.

6. A device for use as a cut? link, stud, solitaire, tie ornament or similar fastening device formed in two parts adapted to be interlocked one with the other, both of said parts being connected together to form a cufi link, each of said parts being provided at one end with a detachable and pivotal plate, and a removable carrier provided with pointed projections around 'its periphery adapted to be attached to either of said plates or to be clenched into the material of a tie for independent use as a tie ornament.
