DETACHABLE SPRING CLIP LABEL HOLDER FOR BOOKS Filed May 14, 1962 INVENTOR. 3 FRED A. RUPPL-L F I G 6 wi gww ATTORNEYS United States Patent C) 3,133,367 DETACHABLE SPRING CLIP LABEL HOLDER FER BUOKS Fred R. Rueppel, Lathrup Village, Mich, assignor to Painter-Arcadia Tool & Die Co., Detroit, Mich, a. corporation of Michigan Filed May 14, 1962, Ser. No. 194,516 1 Claim. (Cl. 40-41) This invention relates generally to label holders, and more particularly, to a detachable spring clip label holder for use on books.
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a novel and improveddetachable spring clip label holder, for use on books and the like, which is provided with a window through which the label is visible and which includes a pair of clip means for detachably mount ing the label holder on the back of a book. The label holder comprises a body portion through which is formed the window for viewing the label. The body portion is provided with a pair of retainer flanges along the sides thereof for holding a label against the back side thereof. The label holder spring clip means is secured to the back side of the label holder body portion by means of a pair of side clamps and a bottom clamp which are integrally formed with the body portion. The two side clamps are disposed on the rear side of the body portion in a position above the label retaining flanges. The bottom clamp is formed on the rear lower side of the label body portion.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved detachable spring clip label holder which is simple and compact in construction, economical of manufacture, and eflicient in use.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved detachable spring clip label holder, for use on books and the like, which comprises a body portion with retainer means for holding a label on the rear side thereof, the body portion being provided with an opening for viewing the label, and wherein spring clip means for securing the label holder to a book is provided and is connected to the body portion by retainer clamp means separate from the label retainer means.
Other objects, features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts of the several views.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective View or" a book provided with a detachable spring clip label holder made in accordance with the principles of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of a metal blank from which the label holder body portion is formed;
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the detachable label holder illustrated in FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a slightly enlarged top view of the detachable label holder illustrated in FIG. 1
FIG. 5 is a rear perspective View of the detachable label holder illustrated in FIG. 1; and,
FIG. 6 is a slightly enlarged horizontal sectional view of the detachable label holder illustrated in FIG. 5, taken along the line 6-6 thereof, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawing, and in particular to FIG.
Patented May 19, 1964 1, the numeral 10 generally designates a book of the looseleaf type which is provided with a detachable spring clip label holder made in accordance with the principles of the present invention. The label holder includes a body portion generally designated by the numeral 11 which is provided with the window opening 12 through which a label as 13 may be viewed.
The body portion 11 is substantially rectangular and includes the upper end plate 14, the lower end plate 15 and the integral side plates 16 and 17. Integrally formed along the sides of the body portion plates 16 and 17, are the label retainer flanges 18 and 19 which are folded along the lines 20 and 21 into the positions shown in FIG. 6. As shown in FIG. 6, the flanges 18 and 19 each have a first portion which is reversely bent back towards the rear face of the body portion 11, and this portion is indicated by the numeral 21. Each of the flanges 18 and 19 are then bent outwardly away from the body portion as indicated by the numeral 22. The outer portion of each of the flanges 18 and 19 are then bent inwardly toward the body portion 11 as indicated by the numeral 23. As shown in FIG. 6, the body portion 11 is arcuately shaped in cross section. The numeral 24 indicates a piece of transparent material which may be used to protect the label 13. As shown in FIGS. 4 and 6 the flange portions 23 engage the side edges of the label 13 and hold it in position against the back of the body portion 11.
The label holder of the present invention is provided with a spring clip means which is U-shaped and which includes the spaced apart legs 25 and 26 which are joined on the lower ends thereof by the bight portion 27. The legs 25 and 26 are secured to the back of the body por tion 11 by means of the clamps 28 and 29 which are formed integral from a point on each side of the body portion 10 adjacent the upper end thereof. The clamps 28 and 29 are bent back around the legs 25 and 26 along the lines 20 and 21 as shown in FIG. 2. It will be seen that the clamps 28 and 29 are disposed above the flanges 18 and 19 and that they function separately therefrom. The legs 25 and 26 are disposed over the flangm 18 and 19 on the portions 21. The bight portion is clamped to the rear side of the body portion 10 by means of the clamp 30 which is formed integral with the body portion and is bent back and over the bight portion 27. The clamp 30 is connected to the body portion 10 but is bent at the line 31 into the clamping position.
As shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, the leg 25 is bent backwardly at the upper end thereof as indicated by the number 32, and thence it is bent downwardly toward the body portion as indicated by the numeral 33. The portion 33 terminates in an arcuate gripping portion 34. The spring clip leg 26 is provided with similar portions 35, 36 and 37, respectively. The material used in the blank shown in FIG. 2 may be any suitable metal or other material. The spring clip is made from any suitable spring wire.
In use, the label 23 is first inserted into the holder between the flanges 18 and 19. The spring clip arms comprising the portions 33, 34, 26 and 37 are then inserted over the back of the book and the holder is forced downwardly until the arm portions 32 and 35 abut the top of the book.
While it will be apparent that the preferred embodiment of the invention herein disclosed is well calculated to fulfill the objects above stated, it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible to modification, variation and change Without departing from the proper scope or fair means of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
In a detachable label holder for a book, the combination comprising: a body portion having an opening therethrough for viewing a label carried on the rear side thereof; a label retainer flange formed along each of the side edges of said body portion on the rear side thereof for retaining engagement with the side edges of a label; a spring clip means for detachably mounting the body portion on a book; said spring clip means including a pair of legs which overlie the label retainer flanges; and, clamp means on said body portion, separate from said label retainer flanges, in clamping engagement with said spring clip legs for securing said spring clip means to the body 5 portion.
