This invention relates to removable label holders for books and the like, and particularly to a label holder having a window through which the label is visible and arms which support the holder on the back of a book.
The present label holder is constructed of a wire frame member and a label holding member which are secured together. The wire of the frame member is bent in U shape, having the ends reversely bent and arched at the ends in engagement with the U-shaped portion to form clamping arms. The label holding member is stamped from sheet metal having two side flanges which are bent over the arms of the U- shaped frame and spaced from the main portion of the stamping to form a slide for the label. The web of the U-shaped portion of the wire frame forms a stop for limiting the downward movement of the label in the holder. ilhe flanges of the stamping are bent over the web to prevent the label holding member from sliding downward of the frame member.
The holder is attached to the book by sliding the clamping arms downwardly over the back of the book in the spaces between the leaves and the cover, with the label holding portion disposed on the outside of the back at the top of the book. The arched portions of the clamping arms engage the book back below the center of the holding member to draw it against the back.
Accordingly, the main objects of the invention are: to provide a label holder which is attachable to the back of a book and clamped thereagainst; to provide a holder made of a frame element of wire bent in U shape forming the web and two legs, the legs of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form clamping arms which draw the label holding member attached to the frame element against the surface of the book to form a label holding member of a stamping having a window therein and side flanges which are bent over the legs of a U- shaped wire frame member to form a slide for the label which is located in the holder by the web of the frame member at the bottom thereof, and, in general, to provide a removable label holder, for a book which is simple in construction and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book having a corporation of Michigan "'f f nspiicano o at r so, i947, Serial No.- 782,972 1 w Tie: a. H -1:
' a removable label holding member of thepresent invention attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the label holding member illustrated in Fig. 1, shown from the front side thereof;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the label holding member illustrated in Fig. 2, as viewed from the rear thereof, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line i l thereof.
In the figures, a book I!) is illustrated which may be a loose-leaf type having rings l I for supporting a plurality of removable sheets 42. Side covers [3 and I4 are provided on the book in extension of the back [5 thereof. The label holding member l6 embodies a U-shaped frame member I! made of wire, having a bottom web portion I8, two side legs l9 and reversely bent clamping arms 2|. The ends of these arms are arcuately formed at 22 for engagement with the lower portion of the label holding element 23. The label holding member 23, as herein illus-- trated, comprises a metal stamping having the side edges flanged at 2 1 and having the front face 25 provided with a window 26. The flanges are bent over the legs IQ of the wire frame member H, with the flanges spaced from the body portion 25 so as to form slides for the label 21. The label is limited in its downward movement by engagement with the web portion l8, and the label holding member 23 is prevented from moving downwardly from the frame member I! by the crimp 28 provided in the flanges 24 above the web portion I8. It will be noted that the engagement of the arcuate portions 22 of the clamping arms 2| with the label holding member 28 is below the center thereof so as to draw the holding member flush against the book back !5 when the member is secured to the book, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4.
When attaching the holder to the book, the label is first inserted in the slides formed by the bent flanges 24 and thereafter the clamping arms H are inserted over the book back l5 directly adjacent, to the covers l3 and Hi and forced downwardly until the webs 29 joining the legs 1 9 to the clamping arms 2| engage the top of the book back. As pointed out above, the arcuate portions 22 of the arms draw the label holding member 23 flush against the back cover of the book and from all appearances the removable label holder forms a permanent part of the book backi"; While the frame member I1 is herein ilhaving a label holding member 23 attached thereto by the bending of the flanges 24 over the legs l9 thereof, it is to be understood that the holding member could be made of materials other than metal, such as plastic, and that the plastic material could be applied in the same manner as the sheet metal member herein illustrated and described or by being molded directly to the frame member.
What is claimed is:
A label holder including, in combination, a body portion made from a sheet of material having an opening therein through which a label may be viewed, the sides of said body portion being reversely bent backwardly over the main body portion and spaced therefrom, wire means extending downwardly in the space between said reversely bent side portions and the body portion and crimped thereabout and fixed therein against upward movement, the space between the side I portions and the body portion inwardly of the 4 wire means forming slides for receiving a label, the projecting ends of the wire means being reversely bent to form supporting arms for the holder.
