To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND HERoLD, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Index-Clips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to index clips, and has for an object to provide a device of thischaracter which will be particularly desirable and adapted for use by bookkeepers or the like and to provide simple and effective means for attaching the article to the leaves of a book.

A further object is to provide a clip with detachable index card carrying means.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.

In thedrawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals'of reference indicate similar parts in the several vieWs:-Figure 1 is a plan view ofthe index clip. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a slightly modified form of my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig.. 1. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing another modified form of my invention.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, and with particular reference to Figs. 1 and 3, there is shown an index clip comprising a clip 1 formed from a single piece of resilient wire bent to form an arm 2 having one end bent downwardly as shown at 3, outwardly as shown at 4t in parallel relation to the arm 2 and upwardly in concavo-convex form as shown at The portion 5 carries an arm (i disposed in spaced parallel relation to the arm 2 and is bent downwardly as shown at 7, inwardly as shown at 8 and is finally bent at right angles as indicated at 9 which last named portion is yieldingly engaged'with a por' tion of the arm 2. v

' An index card retaining member is shown at 1.0. and is preferably stamped to form parallel the edges of an..i11dex vcard 12 are confined. The retaining element in this form of my invention', is ofrectangular form and one of the flanges 11 is slit as shown at 13 to providea lip 14. The arm 2.of the clip is spaced flanges 11 between which' bent at one end to form an arm 15, and this arm is` bent at one end at right angles as shown at '16, and the portion 16 is bent at one end as. shown at 17 to lie in parallel relation -with respect to the arm 15. The constrnctionof the clip is such that a portion ofthe arm 2, and the portions 15, 16 and 17 may be confined between the flanges 11 of the retaining element as clearly shown in the drawing. The index card 12 is colored differently on both sides, and it may be mentioned that I preferably use the colors Red and White, the white indicating that entries are to be made on a particular leaf of a book,.and, the red indicating that the dpage has been completed and all entriesv ma e. The arn' 2 andthe portions 3 and 4 form one element of the coperating parts of the clip while the parts 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 form the other element of the said coperating parts and as'y illustrated, theportions-l and (S by being connected by the concavo-convex portion 5 forms a free manipulating portion .t which is located directly at one side of the card holder so that when it is desired to engage the clip with the leaf of a book or with any other object the said part A can be conveniently manipulated so as to properly associate the said companion elements of the clip with such leaf.

The part A is located immediately at the extremity of the arcuate portion 5, as shown in Fig. 1, and its location with respect to the portion B at the opposite extremity of the arcuate portion provides therewith a stop. The portions A and B are located immediately at one side of the card retainer and they are spaced therefrom so that when embracing the leaf or object to which they are to be fastened they will hold the card retainer in spaced relation and prevent it from shifting or, becoming accidentally displaced or working between the leaves of a page or the like.

In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 2, the card 17 is of an elliptical' form, and the retaining element 1S is of a correspondingI form to' receive the card. The clip 19 in this form of my invention is approximately the same as that previously described, the difference being' in the provision of a straight arm 20 which I use in lieu of the concavo-eonvex portion 5 of the preferred form of my invention, and as clearly shown, the said arm 2O isotlset as indicated at 2l te increase the strength. and eiiciency of the article;

While .l have mentioned in the foregoing that the index cards are different-ly colored, it is ebvious that I may employ characters or other distinguishing means' for accomplishing the desired end. The index cards herein referred to are coated upon both sides with silicate slate so that marks upon said cards can be readily erased, when desired,
