CHARLES QUILT, OF OTTAWA, KANSAS.
TAG OB LABEL HOLDER.
Application filed June 22,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES QUIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Tag or Label Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means whereby a label, tag, or analogous marker may be attached to a variety of articles of different shapes and sizes, the attaching means being reversible, adjustable and readily adaptable to varying conditions so that the label or kindred article may be displayed to the best possible advantage or in any desired pos1- 1011:
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention .it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without, departing from the nature of the invention. f
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a detail view ofthe clamp or attaching member,
Figure 2 is a detail view of the holder for receiving the tag, label, or analogous article,
Figure 3 is a detail view of the clamp screw,
Figure 4 is a detail view of the auxihary jaw, whereby to adapt the clam for firm attachment to round or other sur ace,
Figures 5 to 17, both inclusive, show the parts differently assembled to meet varying conditions,
Figure 18 is a detail view of a modified form of clamp, the parts being separated,
Figure 19 is a side view of the modified form of clamp assembled,
Figures 20 and, 21 show the parts of the modified form of clamp differently assembled and arranged, a
Figure 22 is a View similar to Figure 19,
1922. Serial No; 570,055;
having the auxiliary jaw shown in Figure 1 in position, v
Figure 23 is a detail perspective view of the inner end portion of the short leaf of the modified form of clamp, and
- Figure 24: is a view similar to Figure 22,,
showing the clamp applied to a round article such as the rungof a chair.
Corresponding and likeparts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The article comprises the parts substantially as illustrated in Figures 1,2, 3 and 4 of the drawings. The parts shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 are constructed of sheet material, such as metal, and may be stamped or otherwise formed as found most advantageous. The clamp comprises spaced leaves or elements 1 and 2 which may be of any relative length and an end piece 3 connecting the elements 1 and 2' at one end, The leaf 1 is provided with a terminal clip 1 and the leaf 2 with a terminal clip 5. These clips are formed by reversely'bending end portions of the blank from which the clamp is formed. A portionis partly cut from the leaf 1 and bent to provide an end clip 6 which coacts with the end 3. Openings 7 a-re formed in the parts 1 and 2 at the places indicated to receive the clamp screw 8 shown in Figure 3, whereby the article may be positively secured to they article to which it may be attached. The application of the clamp screw is indicated most clearly in Figures 5, 6, 13, 15 and17, said clamp screw being positioned atthe outer end of either of the leaves 1 or 2,
or intermediate the ends of the leaf 1. An opening 9 is formed in the inner end of l the leaf 2 adjacent the end 3 and is adapted to receive an end of the auxiliary jaw as shown most clearly 1n Figures let and 17.
The opening 10 .formed in the inner end of the leaf 1 by partly cutting and bending the portion to form the end clip 6, is also adapted to receive an end of the auxiliary jaw as shown most clearly in Figures 13 and 15. i
The outer endsof the several clips are out wardly curved to facilitate, the entrance of I the holder when placing the same in position. The folds or bights of the parts form-v ing the several clips are enlarged to coact with the bent ends of the holder to retain ends of the arms 13 and coact with the latter to grip the tag, label, or like article, placed in position for display. The elements 13 and 14 are partly cut from the blank from which the holder is formed and are bent into the form substantially as shown. The holder may be variously applied to the clamp substantially as shown in Figures 5 to 12, both inclusive.
The auxiliary jaw shown in Figure 4 and .variousl a alied in Fi ures 13 14 15 and 3 Pl 1-: 7 a
17, comprises a member 15 of ogee form and a member 16 at one end of the member 15 and substantially at right angles thereto. This auxiliary jaw is provided at opposite ends with clips 17 and 18 for convenience of attachment to the clamps as indicated in Figures 13, 14, 15 and 17. The auxiliary jaw enables the article to be attached to curved and irregular surfaces such as indicated in Figure 24.
To increase the range of usefulness of the article, it is proposed to construct the clamp to admit of adjustment of the leaves or elements 1 and 2 and for this purpose said parts are made separate as indicated most clearly in Figure 18 and the detail views thereof. The part 2 has its innerend bent substantially at a right angle as indicated at 19 and transversely corrugated, edge portions 20 being cut away at the angle to provide clearance for certain parts of the element 1. An intermediate portionofthe outer. end of the bent portion 19 is left plain as indicated at 21,.whereby to more securely hold the parts 1 and 2 when assembled. The leaf or'element 1 has an end portion 22 bent at right angles thereto and terminating in an end clip 6 corresponding to the end clip 6 of the form shown in Figure 1 and for a like purpose. Arms 23 are partly cut from edge portions of the parts 1 and are bent substantially at right angles to the leaf 1 to come opposite and close to the inner side of thebent end 22. The arms 23 are transversely corrugated to match the corrugations of the bent end 19 of the part 2, whereby to hold the parts 1 and 2 in the required adjusted position. VJhen the parts 1 and 2 are assembled, the corrugated end 19 of the part 2 lies between the bent end. 22and the corrugated arm 23 of the part 1, as indicated most clearly in Figures 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24. The part 2 may be reversed as indicated most clearly in Figures 20 and 21, and the clamp so adapted may be inverted as shown in Figure 21. When the part 2 is reversed, the corrugated arms 23 pass through the cut away portions 20. The auxiliary j aw is equally well adapted for use with the adjustable or modified form of clamp as clearly indicated in Figures 22 and 24.
The screw 8 may be used with any of the forms of the device and may be variously applied to the end of either one of the members 1 or 2 or intermediate the ends of the leaf 1, as indicated at 7, to positively secure the clamp to the part to which it is attached.
It should be stated that when the leaf 2 comes down and coacts with the part 4 that the pressing of 2 on 4 will force 4 to clasp more tightly around the article, thus forming a secure clasp about the article to which it is applied.
It is observed that the holder in its several forms comprises a. pair of relatively spaced leaves 1 and 2 which are of different lengths, an intermediate section 3 from which the leaves extend in the same direction, clips 4 and. 5 at the free endsof the leaves and extending in the direction of or towards the intermediate section 3, and a clip 6 upon the outer side of the intermediate section 3. In the modification shown in Figures 18 to 24, both inclusive, the inter- V mediate section connecting the leaves 1 and 2 is extensible whereby to admit of spacing the leaves apart a greater or less distance as occasion may require. The means for securing the holder to a support may consist of the inherent spring action of the leaves, or the set-screw 8, or the intermediate element 15, or a combination of the elements 8 and 15, as indicated most clearly in Figures 13 and 15.
What is claimed is;
1. A label holder embodying a pair of relatively spaced leaves and an intermediate section from which the leaves extend in one direction, the free ends of the leaves being provided with clips.
