1 Glaim: (01. 248 -305) This invention relates to multiple purpose clips, that is resilient or equivalent clips of appropriate materials such as are adapted to be mounted on a wall, or any other equivalent relatively stationary support in a manner to conveniently clasp and retain miscellaneous articles, such as bills, and slips, cardboard calendars, and many, many similar items including articles of apparel.

Briefly, in carrying out the invention, I have evolved and produced a simple and economical clip such as may be fashioned from either sheet metal or bent wire, the construction being such that by attaching the median portion thereof to the wall or other support, the end portions serve to provide the desired tensioning properties to not only hold the clip in place but to enable it, in turn, to hold the associated calendar or other articles in place.

In carrying out the invention, in one form I use an elongated metal strip having its ends bent in opposite directions to form a hook-like curl, the intermediate portion being secured in place either by a staple, or a fastening screw to thus 7 provide the desired adjustable mount and tensioning properties.

In another form of the invention, I fashioned the device from a single length of metal bent upon itself, this being wire or the like, and this form also being adaptable to be anchored in place by a staple or the like.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a multiple purpose clip constructed in accordance with this invention, this being one form contemplated for use.

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a slightly different form of clip.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the wire form.

Referring now to the drawings, and to Figure 1, it will be seen that the clip is struck out of sheet metal or equivalent material, the same being denoted as a single object, by the numeral 4. This comprises an elongated strip or body portion of appropriate size, having its opposite ends curled and bent to the forms indicated at the points 6 and 1. The point 6 is sort of a hook and the part 1 is an eye and this functions as a clamp to secure the cardboard or other article 8 in place. The intermediate portion of the strip is saddled and anchored in place by the staple or the like 9.

In the form seen in Figure 2 and indicated at In, we have a strip II with a central elongated slot l2 and its opposite ends fashioned to oppositely bent hooks l3 and I4, respectively.

In the form seen in Fiuure 3, the clip is de- 2 noted by the numeral l5 and this is fashioned from wire, that is a single length of wire bent upon itself as a general U-shaped form. It comprises specifically a laterally bent connective or bight portion [6, and the pair of side or limb portions I1 these being laterally directed toward each other as at points I8, and merging into the limb extension [9, the latter terminating in duplicate hooks 20 to hold the cardboard or other article 2| in place. Here again a staple 9a is employed for holding the clip in place. 7

In the forms of the invention seen in Figures 1 and 2, the clips are reversible, that is to say either end may be placed up or down, and in either instance when the clip is suspended from the wall, that end which is turned in serves to put the other end portion under tension, This constitutes the means which, in conjunction with the anchoring staple 9 serves to provide a resilient grip for holding the article 8 in place. Figure 2 is exactly the same as Figure 1 functionally, except that the slot l2 serves to accommodate a screw or equivalent fastener (not shown) which takes the place of the staple 9 employed in Figure 1.

Whereas the opposite ends of the devices seen in Figures 1 and 2 are substantially duplicate of one another, the arrangement is slightly different in Figure 3. That is to say, in this arrangement the lateral bend of the bight I6 constitutes the means for abutting the wall or other support and placing the limbs under tension. The hooks 20 can be used for the same purpose, or they can be employed as. extra hangers, if necessary or desired.

It is believed that in all three forms of the invention there are common characteristics which Would seem to support the allowance of generic claims and specific claims to each of the species.

A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty sumcient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.

I claim:

As a new article of manufacture, a multiple purpose clip comprising a relatively fixed support, a substantially U-shaped member including a pair of duplicate approximately parallel limbs ing existing between the outer free end portions 10 Number of said limbs and providing shoulders intermediate the ends of the limbs, and a staple having its prongs secured to said support and its central connective portion spaced parallel from the support, the closely spaced hooked end portions of said U-shaped member extending downwardly through and within the limited confines of said staple, the laterally directed upper end of the U-shaped member resting against the support, the shoulders engaging the staple and the hooked a free ends of the limbs being directed outwardly and away from said support.
