This invention relates to holders more par ticularly useful in attaching stamped sheet metal emblems such as association or fraternal insignia to automobiles or other vehicles.

The aim of my invention is to provide a holder of the indicated kind which is inconspicuous, simple in construction and of few parts, capable of economical manufacture from sheet metal, easily attached to the vehicle, and readily adaptable to emblems of difierent sizes.

One way in which the above desiderata may be conveniently attained in practice will be manifest from the detailed description here inafter of the typical embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, whereof Fig. I is a front view of the holder placed to support an association emblem or initial plate such as used on automobiles.

Fig. II is an illustration similar to Fig. I, drawn to a larger scale, with the emblem re moved so as to better show the relation of the parts constituting the holder.

Fig. III is a transverse section of the or ganization, taken as indicated by the arrows IIIIII in Fig. I.

Figs. IV, V and VI are perspective views of the holder parts.

As herein depicted, my improved holder embodies opposing upper and lower clamp members 10, 11, and a supplemental member 12 which is adjustable relative to the upper clamp member 10 in a manner later on e:-:-

plained; these parts being all struck from sheet metal preferably of the same gauge or thickness. The lower clamp member 11, it will be observed, is generally right angular in form with the rear of its horizontal portion 13 fashioned to the form of a V-shaped jaw 14 suitable to effectively engage the bottom side or edge of a support S (Figs. I, II and III) which may, for example, be the bumper bar of an automobile. The horizontal portion 13 of the lower clamp member 11 is moreover slotted as at 15 for free passage and guidance of the supplemental member 12, while its depending portion 16 is formed with spaced rip-turned hook lugs 17 adapted to engage the lower edge of the plate emblem E in the manner shown in Figs. I and III.

The upper clamp member 10 is fashioned to V-configuration both at the front and at the rear, as indicated respectively at 18 and 19, the latter serving as a jaw to engage the top or upper edge of the support S.

The supplemental member 12 is in the form of an elongated tongue with a lug 20 at its top end turned downward to engage the upper edge of the plate emblem E after the manner illustrated in Fig. III. The side edges of the member 12 are toothed as at 21, for capacity to interlock, in different positions of adjustment, within a central cut-out 22 in the frontal V bend 18 of the upper clamp member 10.

As a means to secure the device to the support S, I preferably employ a headed screw 23 whereof the threaded shank is passed downward through an opening 24 in the up per clamp member 10 and an axially-aligned tapped aperture 25 in the lower clamp member 11.

In applying thedevice, the clamp members 10, 11 are first spaced to approximate the Width of the support S and the supplemental member 12 adjusted relative to the upper clamp member 10 to suit the size of the emblem E; or, in other words, until the gripping lugs 17, 20 respectively of the lower clamp member 11 and the supplemental member 12 are properly distanced to hook over the top and bottom edges of said emblem. With this preparation, the screw 23 is turned up tight to draw the clamp members 10, 11 together over the support S. Now by virtue of the ability of the supplemental member 12 to slide in the guide slot 15 of the lower jaw 11, it is drawn down incidental to tight ening of the screw 23 as above explained to the end thatthe plate emblem E is slightly flexed outward as shown in Fig. III, and thereby effectively gripped and sustained against displacement between the opposing hook lugs 17 20. The screw 23 thus serves in a dual capacity, i. e. to secure the device to the support, and to cause the emblem E to be firmly gripped in the holder.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A holder for sustaining objects such as plate emblems comprising opposing clamp members, one to directly engage one edge of the emblem, a supplemental member adapted to interlock with the other clamp member and to engage the opposite edge of the emblem, and means operable to draw the two clamp members together in eflt'ecting concurrent gripping of the emblem and securing of the holder to a support.

2. A holder for sustaining objects such as plate emblems comprisin opposing clamp members, one to directly engage one edge of the emblem, a supplemental member adapted to interlock in different positions of adjustment with the other clamp member and to engage the opposite edge of the emblem, and a screw to draw the two clamp members together in effecting concurrent gripping of the emblem and securing or" the holder to a support.

3. A holder for sustaining objects such as emblems comprising opposing clamp members, one to directly engage one edge of the emblem, a supplemental member adapted to engage the oppositeedge of the emblem, said supplemental member being toothed for interlocking engagement in adjusted positions with the other of said clamp members, and means operable to draw the two clamp members together in eifecting concurrentgripping of the emblem and securing 01": the holder to a support.

4. A holder for sustaining objects such as emblems comprising opposing clamp members struck from sheet metal each with an angular jaw, and one with lugs to engage one edge of the emblem, a supplemental member also of sheet metal with a lug to engage the opposite edge of the emblem, said supplemental member being slidable in an opening of the clamp memberlast referred to and having teeth forinterlocking engagement in adjusted positions with the other of said clamp members, and means operable to draw the two clamp members together in effecting concurrent gripping of the emblem and securing of the holder to a support.
