BADGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,730, dated June 24, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOSEPHINE DE YOUNG and SARAH ANDREWS, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Eadges, of which the following is a specificaion.

Our invention relates to improvements in ornamental badges; and it consists, generally, in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

2 and 4 of any suitable metal, which may be ornamented or imprinted with any suitable design. The plates are secured together at their circumference. A United States coin is attached to one of the plates in such a manner that it can be seen but not easily removed therefrom. The design which we prefer to construct for plate 2 for the obverse side of the badge is that shown in Fig.

1, and partially represents a design on a twenty dollar gold piece. A recess or indentation 6 covers a portion of this design and is formed in the surface of the plate 2, and is made of sufficient size to receive a United States coin, preferably a dime, which is securely fixed to the plate within said recess by solder, or in some other convenient way, to prevent it from being readily detached therefrom. The surface of theplate2 around the recess may be gilt, in order to more fully carry out the design. The design upon the reverse side or plate 4 consists of representations in relief as follows: In the central and lower portions is a representation of a building of some ornamental design, preferably surmounted by dome and tower. In the upper right and left hand portions busts may be represented, and on a ribbon or belt below each may be placed the name of the person ington, 177 6. An inscription may be placed upon this face, as that shown in the drawings, which consists of the words The Columbian placed around the upper edge, \Vorlds Fair across the front of the dome, and Chicago, 1893, at the bottom. Other designs and inscriptions may be substituted in place of the one described for this face of the badge without departing from our invention.

A supporting ribbon 8 of some flexible fabric maybe secured between the two plates of the badge dependent from a bar 10. Upon this bar we prefer to place some ornamental design, as an eagle, to which a pin may besecured to serve to fasten the badge in place. The bar 10 may be made hollow, with a slot in its lower portion, and the ribbon inserted from the end, in order that the ribbon and badge. may be "reversed, if desired. If preferred, the ribbon may be attached to the bar, as shown in Fig. 4, in which a hook and eye 14 serve to secure the two together in such manner that the ribbon may be easily changed and show either side of the badge desired.

We claim as our invention- 1. A badge having upon one side, in relief, a representation of a building and of two figures, and upon the same face the words The Columbian, Worlds Fair, Chicago, 1893, and below one of the figures the words and figures 5 Columbus, 1492, and below the other Washington, 1776, substantially as described.

2. The herein-described badge,- having upon one side a recess with a coin inserted and secured'therein, and upon the other side, in relief, the representation of a building and the words The Columbian and Worlds Fair, and also in relief, upon the same side, representations of appropriate figures, substantially as set forth.
