PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT D. YATES, OF NEWARK, TEVV JERSEY.
DETACHABLE POCKET DEVICE FOR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No '77 9,898, dated January 10, 1905. Application filed June '7, 1904. Serial No. 211,461.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. YATEs, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the countyof Essexand State of New J ersoy, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Detachable Pocket Devices for Garments; and I dohereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it:appertains 'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, andto numerals of reference marked thereon, which-form a part of this specification.
Thistinvention relates to improvements in pockets for garments of thexvarious' kinds; and the invention has forits principal object to provide a pocket device which is formed with one or more pockets and means for detachably. connecting the pocket device-at its opposite endsto a garment,' the device being variously made and, as stated, being provided with one or. more pockets I .A further ,object ofthis invention is to provide a pocket-device of the character hereinafter more particularly 'spfilcified, the same being provided with a fastening means in the manner to be hereinafter more fully set forth for removably attaching the pocket "device to any part of a garment.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly specified will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention.
With the various objects of my invention in view the same consists in the novel pocket device adapted to be detachably secured upon a garment and hereinafter more fully set forth, and, furthermore, this invention consists in the several arrangements and combinations of the various parts, all of which will be more particularly described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are two face views of two forms of pocket devices embodying the principles of my present invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the pocket device, said section being taken'on line 3 3 in said Fig. 1.
- Fig. 4 is a face view of another form of pocket .device comprising a facing and backing with plan view of the said reinforcing means or frame and backing; and Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section of certain portions of these parts,
the'said section being taken through one of the fastening devices by means of which the said facing and backing are secured upon opposite sides of the reinforcing means or wire frame.
1 Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indi cate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete pocket device, and the same con- 'sists, in general, of a body having a suitable facing 2 of any material which has its marginal edges 3 turned over the edges of a reinforcing means or inner filling 4:, which may be a piece of cardboard or a thin sheet of metal, asindicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, but which" may be of any other suitable material, as will be clearly evident. Against the rear surface of this inner filling 4 there may be arranged a backing 5, with which the marginal edge portions of the facing 2 are connected in any suitable manner, preferably by stitching; but of course it will be understood that the said facing 2 and backing 5 may be secured upon the opposite faces of the reinforcing means or filling 4 in any other desired manner.
Suitably secured upon the outer surface of the facing 2 there may be one or more outside pockets 6, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, or the facing 2 may be made with one or more openings or slits 7 suitably surrounded by a binding 8 or the like, an inside pocket 9, as indicated in the dotted outline in Fig. 2 of the drawings, being attached to the rear face of the facing 2 in communication with each opening or slit 7, substantially as shown. That the said pocket device may be detachably secured upon any portion ing loops or eyes 19.
of a piece of wearing-apparel, the device is provided upon the back and at both of its end portions with fastening devices in the forms of clasps 10 and 11, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
In Figs. 4, 5,and 6 I have represented a pocket device 17 embodying the principal features of my present invention, but in which I have dispensed with the use of the cardboard or other similarfilling l, and in place of said filling 1 I employ a frame 18, which is preferably made from wire, substantially as shown. This frame 18 is made at its corners and at other suitable points of the frame, if desired, with receiv- The upper portion 20 of said frame is made with a loop or ring 21, with which is connected an eye portion 23 of a suitably-constructed clasp 22. In a like manner the lower portion 241 of said'frame is made with a loop or ring 25, with which is connected the eye portion 27 of a clasp 26. The facing 2 and the backing 5 are suitably secured upon opposite sides of the frame 18. One preferred construction for securing the said facing and backing upon the opposite sides of the said frame 18 is to provide the backing 5 at the points which correspond to the positions of the loops or eyes 19 of said frame with back plates or disks 28, to which are secured suitable posts 29, which extend into and through the loops or eyes 19 and have their slightly-enlarged heads or end portions 30 in detachable holding engagement with correspondingly-arranged eyelets 31, which are suitably secured to the facing 2, as will be clearly understood.
From the foregoing description of my invention it will be clearly seen that I have devised a simply constructed pocket device which can be readily attached in any desired position upon a garment and which can be just as quickly removed therefrom, whereby an independent pocket is provided for a garment which may be variously employed at different times with different pieces of wearingapparel.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and their parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and their parts as described in the previous specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a detachable pocket device, the combination, with a body comprising an interiorlyarranged reinforcing means, a facing and backing secured upon said reinforcing means, and a pocket connected with said facing, of an attaching device at each extreme end of said body for detachably securing said body to a garment, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a detachable pocket device, the combination, with a body comprising an interiorlyarranged wire frame provided with receiving loops, a facing and backing arranged upon opposite sides of said wire frame, means secured in said loops for securing said facing and backing upon said frame, and an attaching device at each end of said frame for detachably securing said body to a garment, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a detachable pocket device, the combination, with a body comprising an interiorlyarranged wire frame provided with receiving loops, a facing and backing arranged on 0pposite sides of said wire frame, means secured in said loops for securing said facing and backing upon said frame, consisting, essentially, of disks provided with posts having head portions extending through the loops of the wire frame, and eyelets with which said heads are in separable holding engagement, and an attaching device at each end of said frame for detachably securing said body to a garment,
substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of June, 1904.
ROBERT D. YATES.
