UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CHANTRELL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
TAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,165, dated September 20, 1881.
Application filed January 27, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN CHANTRELL, of Bridgeport,in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut,-have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tags, of which the following is a specification.
Figurel represents one of my improved tags. Fig. 2 is a sectional edge view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a tag with a looped cord. Fig. 4. represents a modification oi the tag. Fig. 5 is a sectional edge View of the tag shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents another modification of the same. Fig. 7 represents another modification of the tag. Fig. 8 is a sectional edge view ofthe tag shown in Fig. 7.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the manufacture of tags and lessen their cost.
The invention consists in securing the cord to the body of the tag by a clip of sheet metal passed through a slit in the tag-body, and having tongues formed upon its ends bent down upon either or both sides of the clip, so that the said cord will be firmly connected with the said tag-body, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body of the tag, which is made of paper or other suitable material in the ordinary manner.
B is a strip of thin sheet metal, forming a clip, which ispassed through aslit in the tag A, near its upper end. The ends of the clip B are slitted. The alternate tongues D thusformed are out 01f and the remaining tongues D are bent down upon the opposite sides of the tag A, over the cord C, placed upon the edge of the saidtag and upon the outer sides of the other ends of the said clip B, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so as to firmly connect the cord C with the tag A.
(ModeL) The middlepart of the cord 0 may be clamped by the clip B, as shown in Fig. 1, or the ends of the cord C maybe clamped by the said clip B, forming a loop, as shown in Fig. 3, according as the purpose for which the tag is to be used may require.
If desired, the tongues D of the sheet-metal clip B can be passed in opposite directions through the slit in the tag-body A'and bent down upon the opposite sides of the said clip B, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the cord 0 being clamped in the bend of the said clip.
For some purposes the cord C may be omitted and the clip made with two points, E, upon the corners of one end, and a tongue, D, upon the middle part of the other end, and the said tongue turned down through the space between the said points. In this case the points E are left projecting, so that they can be thrust into the article to which the tag is to be attached and then bent down to keep the said tag in place.
Itdesired, tongues may be formed upon only one end of the clip B and bent down over the other end against the body of the said clip.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with thecord and tag-body,
JOHN OHANTRELL.
