METALLIC PASTENBR. V
Patented Dec. 27,1881.
INVENTOR N. PEIERs. Plwlmlilhugmphef. Washin ton. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE W. McGILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METALLICA FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,616, dated December 27, 1881.
Application filed November 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. McGILL, a
\ citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fastenin gs for Price and Size Tickets orTags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap and efficient metallic fastening to be affixed to price and size tickets, tags, and such like, to enable the same to be readily attached to woolens, linens, silks, and such like fibrous material, without cutting or injuring the fiber of the same; audits construction and operation are as follows: A piece of flexible round wire, pin-pointed at both ends, is bent into the form of a staple, with a straight top, A, and pointed shanks a 0. as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. In some cases the top of the staple is struck flat, as shown in this figure. The staple so formed is provided with a headpiece, E, fashioned from sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 2. The center of the longer part of this head-piece has struck in it a sunken seat, a, for the reception of the top A of the wire staple, and holes a a for the reception of its shanks a. 0. The staple is inserted in this head-piece, its top occupying the seat a and its shanks the holes a a, and is held therein by means of the flap E of the head-piece, which is folded over the same, as shown in Fig. 3. The pointed armse e of the head-piece are bent up at right angles from the same, as shown in this and other figures of the drawings. The fastening is now in condition to be affixed to the price ticket or tag, which is accomplished by forcing its arms 6 6 through the ticket or tag and turning them down on the other side of the same, as shown in the sectional Fig. 4, in which D represents the ticket or ta g. The tag so provided is attached to the material to be marked or ticketed by forcing the wire shanks (No model.)
a a of its fastener through the same and turning them down on the opposite side, their pinpointed ends and round wire body forcing aside the fibers of the material in their entrance, without cutting or injuring the same.
The head-piece may be made without the flap E, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, the staple being held in its seat in the same by the body of the ticket or tag, as shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the flapless head-piece, taken on the line w m of Fig. 5.
Where it is desired to use both sides of the ticket or tag for marking or pricing, &c., I leave the top A of the staple unstruck, and close or hinge it in the free end 0 of the flap of the head-piece, as shown in Fig. 9, and attachthe fastener to the ticket or tag in the position shown in Fig. 10, which represents a back view of the same, thereby practically hinging the ticket or tag to the top A of the staple in manner to admit either side of the ticket or tag being exposed and marked at will, while the same is attached by its wire shanks a a, as before described, to the material on which it is being used for pricing, 810.
I do not claim herein anything shown or claimed in United States Letters PatentNos. 249,850 and 249,851, issued to me November 22, 1881; but
What I do claim herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A metallic fastening for price tickets and tags, consisting of a piece of flexible wire of suitable size, pin-pointed at both ends, and of a staple form, in combination with a sheetmetal head-piece provided with ticket-holding arms 6 6, connected and arrangedas herein set forth and described, and adapted to be attach ed to a ticket or tag, and to operate substantially as specified.
2. Aticketor taghavingtwo wire pin-pointed shanks, a a attached to it by means of a sheetmetal clip, E, substantially in the mannerand for the purpose herein set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, GEORGE WV. MGGILL. Witnesses:
