ARTHUR L. YOUNG, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
DISPLAY-CVLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 20,389, dated February 10, 1903. Application filed October 9, IQOZY Serial No. 126,460. (No model.)
To otZ whom, it may con/061%:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L.YoUNG, a citi-- zen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, haveinventeda new and useful Improvementin Display-Clamps, of whichl the following is a specification. In trays for displaying jewelry or other ornamental articles, as well as in cases in which- "clamps were liable to separate from the lining of the case or other material to which they are secured.
The object of this inventionis to provide a more substantial clamp; and to this end the invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the clamp and the supportingspring, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure I is a perspective view showing my improved clamp. Eig. 2 is a perspective view of the spring-support for the-clamp. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of my improved clamp, showing the same secured to the lining of a tray or case. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the spring-support for the clamp. Fig. is atransverse sectional View of the clamp provided with the modified form of the spring-support shown in Fig. 4: and secured to the lining forming part of the back of the display box, tray,- or case.
In the drawings, a 'and a indicate the usual form of the strips used to form the clamp. As shown in Fig. 5, the strips may be formed both alike by uniting the two in the middle rather than putting the whole of the groove into one and making the other strip without a groove. The formation of the strip forms no part of myv present invention.
b indicates a strip of sheet metal of sufficient hardness to act as a spring, the ends b b' being bent at right angles to themiddle portion of the nstrip and perforated with the holes b2.
c indicates the lining forming part of the back of the display tray or case.
In the preferred form the strips a and ct are usually secured together by a strip of flexible material a2, glued or otherwise secured to the back and usually to one side of the strips, as is shown in Fig. 3.
In constructing my clamp I perforate the lining c and push the ends b b of the springplate b through the perforations of the same. I now set the two strips a and o. on top of the lining and between the ends b b of the springplate and then secure the two strips, one to each of the two ends b b of the spring-plate, by means of the pins b3, which extend through the holes b2 b2 and into the strips, as is shown in Fig. 3.
In the modified form in bending the springplate I out out. of the central portion b the parts b4 b4 and leave the margins b5 b5. By this construction the two strips a ot, whether formed, as shown in Eig. 5, of two equal parts or, as shown in Figs. I and 3, of two unequal parts, may be secured to the ends b b and then the parts b4 b4 inserted into thelining c and bent under the same, as is shown in Fig. 5. In either construction the spring-plate gives a substantial support to the strips forming the lining, insures a firm clamping of the articles to be displayed, and makes a strong and durable display-clamp.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a display-clamp, the combination with the clamping members-and the lining, of a plate-spring bearing on the clamping members and extending under the lining, as described. Y
2. In a display-clamp, the combination with the clamping members,of a sheet-metal spring secured to the sides of the clamping members and to the lining, as described.
3. In a display-clamp, the combination with the clamping members of the plate-spring b, 'the bent ends b' b of the plate, and the lining c, as described.
4. In a display-clam p, the combinationwith the clamping members and the lining, of a spring-plate having the ends b b and means for securing the plate to the lining and clamping members, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR L. YOUNG.
