UNITED: STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS B. PRAHAR, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO PRAHAR & SHEPARD, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE-FASTENING FOR HAND-SATCH ELS.
t-LPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,973, dated June 1, 1886.
I Application filed March 20. 1886. Serial No. 195,972. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs B. PRAI-IAR, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handle-Fastenings for Hand-Satchels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, [o and which is a front elevation of a handsatchel frame to which my improvement has been applied, one of the handle-caps being shown in sections. The object of this invention is to provide 1 5 handle-fasteningsforhand-satchels constructed in such a manner that the said-fastenings will not be liable to separate when subjected to a severe strain, and which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention consists in the combination, with a hand-satchel frame and its handlecaps having perforations in the opposite sides of their lower parts, of the open rings having their ends bent inward and inserted in the said perforations, and the hingingstaples attached to the said frame and engaging with the said open rings, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A B represent the parts of the frame of a hand-satchel, the ends of which are hinged to each other in the ordinary manner. The parts A B of the frame are secured to each other when closed by a ball-fastening, O, or other suitable fastening.-
5 To the part A of the frame are secured staples D, within which are hinged the open rings E. The rings E may be made plain or may have knobs or other ornamental work formed upon them, and may be circular or 0 of fanciful shape, as may be desired. The ends of the open rings E are bentinward, and are inserted in perforations F in the opposite -tions F in the opposite sides of their lower G, and when inserted in the said perforations the downward bends of the said ends will pre- Vent them from being drawn out by a strain upon the handle.
With handle-fastenings constructed with plain rings,as heretofore practiced, the trouble has been that when subjected to a strain applied through the handle the said rings, unless soldered, would open and come out and allow the handle to become detached, which trouble is wholly remedied by my improvement.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cornbination, with ahand-satchel frame,
A B, and its handle-caps G, having perforaparts, ofthe open rings E,havingtheirends bent inward and insertedin the said perforations of the handle-caps, and the 'hinging-staples D, attached to the said frame and engaging with the said open rings, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said handle-caps will be securely connected with the satchel-frame and will not be liable to be disconnected by a strain upon the handle, as set forth. I
LOUIS B. PRA'HAR.
