ENVELOPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,215, dated June 16, 1885.

Application filed July 31, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Bonner P. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofPhiladelphia, State ofPennsylvauia, have invented a new and useful l1nprovement in Envelopes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view of an envelope embodying my invention prior to use. Fig. 2 is a view of a detached portion thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of opposite sides thereof when in use. Fig. 5 is asection of a portion in line 00 at, Fig. 3, enlarged.

My invention relates to improvements in envelopes used for mailing or other purposes; and it consists in the details of construction hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of an envelope, and B the closing-flap thereof. In the hack of the body A, adjacent to the flap B, is a slit or opening, a, in which is inserted a clip, 0, the same consisting of a short bar, I), of metal having a head, 0, the metal being of a flexible nature so that it may be readily bent, the bar being located on the outside of the envelope and extending in the direction ofthe length thereof, its head 0 bearing against the wall of the slit a, so as to hold the clip and prevent displacement of the same in the direction toward the flap B. The overlapping portion (1 of the body of the envelope is gummed to the contiguous portion, and the head 0 of the clip thus retained between said portions, whereby the clip is firmly connected with the body of the envelope and prevented from shifting laterally orin the direction from the flap B. It will be seen that when the envelope is opened the clip is in position shown in Fig. 1. Vhen the envelope is filled, the flap B is folded over the body of the envelope, thus closing the same, and the body of the envelope is again folded, say at the line 6, whereby the (No model.)

flap is inclosed between the top part of the back of the body of the envelope and the adjacent part of said back, whereby the mouth or opening ofthe envelope is completely closed, there being atreble thickness of material folded over and against the back of the envelope, as most clearly seen in Fig. 5. The clip is in contact with said thickness, and its outer end is now bent over the top of the envelope, formed by the told at 0, so as to take hold of the front face of the body of the envelope, thus securely retaining the flap B and adjacent. thicknesses in closed position and preventing opening of the same, whereby the envelope is reliably closed; and its fastening renders it admirably adapted for mailing merchandise, as the contents of the same are readily accessible for inspection by the post-office officials without destroying the envelope or consumption of much time, as the clip may be quickly bent back from the face of the envelope and the flap B opened, thus uncovering the mouth of the envelope and exposing the interior thereof, after which the envelope may be closed and again secured by the clip, which is clinched or bent in position, as hereinbefore stated.

hen the envelope reaches its destination by mail or otherwise, it may be easily opened, as is evident, and it remains intact and in condition for future service.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

An envelope having the slit a in the back of the same, in combination with the flexible nietallie clip 0, having a head, 0, the said clip being passed through said slit in the back of the envelope and retained by said head 0, and having its outer end attachable by bending to the front of the envelope, substantially as described.
