UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. GROSH, OF CLEAR SPRING, MARYLAND.
ENVELOP.
T0 all whom t may concern Beit known that I, THOMAS IV. GRosi-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear Spring, in the county of Vasliington and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to envelops and has for an object to provide fastening means for the sealing flap to secure the same in closed position and to prevent said flap from being opened without detection.
Ano-ther object of the invention is to provide a fastening wherein the sealing flap receiving portion thereof will be disposed with relation to an adjacent portion of the envelop to facilitate the connection of the same with the sealing flap.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a section taken vertically through an envelop showing the application of the fastening thereto and illustrating the manner of connecting the sealing flap with the retaining tongue of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the means for securing the retaining tongue in a locked condition. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the sealing flap.
The envelop 1 herein illustrated may be of the usual well known construction with the exception of the sealing flap 2, the latter having a horizontally disposed elongated opening 3 therein which is reinforced by a suitable member t which may be glued or otherwise suitably fastened to said flap whereby to strengthen the opening 3 and prevent the accidental tearing of the sealing flap for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The fastening device 5 comprises an inner member 6 of frangible material and an outer washer 7, the former including a main body portion 8 which lies in flat Contact with the inner surface of the wall 9 of the envelop. Said body portion is preferably provided with a rivet 10 which extends through the wall 9 and through the washer 7, being upset at 11 against one side of the washer so that the fastening is operatively sustained upon the envelop as is evident. The main body portion 8 is curved inwardly at its upper end as at 12 and then extended downwardly as at 13 at an angle to the plane of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 31, 1912.
Patented Feb. 25,1913. Serial No. 718,148.
the body portion 8 to form a retaining tongue. The mainbody portion has a locking projection 14: stamped therefrom and as illustrated the tongue engaging portion 15 of said projection is normally disposed in spaced parallel relationto the adjacent portion of the body member. The tongue 13 terminally extended below the plane of the portion 15 of the locking projection where it is provided with a hook 16. The bill 17 of said hoo-k is normally disposed at one side of the portion 15 and in spaced relation thereto whereby to facilitate extending the tongue 13 into the opening 3 of the sealing flap 2.
Now that the details of construction of the article are described it is said that after the envelop is supplied with matter to be sealed the iiap 2 is folded to the position shown in Fig. 1, the tongue 13 of the fastening being threaded through the opening 3 of the sealing Hap 2. The envelop then taken between the lingers of the hand and on the application of pressure against the o-pposite sides of the envelop in line with the fastening 5 the bendable locking projection 14 and the tongue 13 will be pressed into the positions shown in Fig. 2. At this time the effective locking portion 15 of the projection 14 will be extended into the hook 16 at the lower end of the retaining tongue 13. As stated the device is preferably formed of frangible metal so that after the proper sealing of the envelop is made the fastening can not be tampered with without liability of being broken. It is also obviously seen that the sealing flap 2 will be torn immediately at its point of connection with the fastening device should any great pressure be applied to the sealing flap in the act of releasing the same from the fasten` mg.
I claim An envelop having its sealing flap provided with an opening, a iap fastening secured to one of the walls of the envelop and comprising a frangible member having a body portion secured to the envelop and provided with a body portion and a terminal locking tongue, the terminal locking tongue being normally disposed at an angle to the body portion of the fastening whereby to permit of the extension of the tongue through the opening in the sealing flap to permit a portion of the sealing Hap to lie between the body portion and tongue of the fastening, a hook on the free terminal of the plied to the opposite sides of the envelop in tongue, a bendable looking portion formed line with the fastening. 1o on the body portion and extending in the In testimony whereof affix my signa-ture direction ot' the tongue and terminally disinpresence of two Witnesses.
posed above the hook of the tongue normally THOMAS 7. GROSH. and adapted to be bent into the plane of the Witnesses:
body portion and to be extended into the PAUL S. SOWERS,
hook of the tongue when pressure is ap E. J. MILLER.
