Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ()ct. id, 1913.
Application filed July '1, 1912. Serial No. 706,933.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE D. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Signatures, Pamphlets, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in book signatures, pamphlets, etc., and it has for its salient object to provide a simple, inexpensive and extremely convenient means of attaching a group of leaves, as for example a signature of a book or a complete pamphlet, to a book back or cover.
In modern business it is quite customary to get out supplements to books, which supplements are intended to be placed inside the cover of the original book. This course is often followed in getting out catalogues, directories, price books, etc., etc. Many expedients have been devised for fastening such supplements inside a book cover, ranging from mechanical devices, such as bolts, bars, etc., down to an individual paster-slip for each leaf.
My present invention is of such character that the maker of the signature or pamphlet can, without additional labor, and without considerable additional cost, and at the same time that he is making the signature, apply thereto a paster-attachment which enables the signature or pamphlet to be properly secured in place in the book cover with the utmost convenience, without the use of tools or accessories of any character and with great security.
The invention is capable of wide applica tion, but we have chosen to illustrate the same in connection with a price book, to which has been attached a supplement consisting of a fractional yard calculator, and which supplement is equipped with my invention.
Referring to the drawingFigure l is a perspective view of an opened price book and supplemental signature therein; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supplement signature shown in place in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective showing the manner in which the paster-strip is permanently attached to the leaves of the signature or pamphlet.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates as a whole a pamphlet comprising a plurality of pairs of leaves formed of sheets folded along the center in the usual manner.
2 designates what I term a pastor-strip, consisting of a strip of comparatively tough flexible sheet material, as fabric or paper, one side of which,-the outermost,-3 is covered with a coating of dried adhesive, as mucilage or glue. This pa-Ster-strip is permanently secured to the outside or back of the pamphlet or signature 1 along the fold l thereof, by means of a plurality of staples or stitches 4, which staples or stitches are the same which serve to bind the leaves of the signature or pamphlet together in forming the same. In other words, the pasterstrip is applied in proper relation to the fold of the signature, and when the leaves of the latter are stitched together the stitches are extended through the pasterstrip, so that the application of the pastelstrip involves practically no additional labor. The pamphlet or signature thus formed may be applied to the inside back of any suitable book cover by simply moistening the adhesive of the paster-strip and prcsent the latter firmly against the surface to which it is to be attached. As shown in the embodiment chosen to illustrate my invention, the supplement 1 is applied to the inside back strip 5 of a price book cover o. In the price-book shown the inner sides of the covers are formed with upper and lower pockets 6 and 7, respectively, into which are fitted the upper and lower margins of the usual cardboard backs of price pads S; and 9 designates a stiif leaf of board bound in the price book and forming a back or support for the signature 1. The stiff leaf 9 is attached at its inner end to a flexible binding strip 9' which is pasted into the main cover 5. These features, however, form no part of the present invention.
It will be obvious that a paster-strip attachment applied as described will permit the group of leaves to which it is attached to be conveniently applied under many clifferent conditions. For example, the supplement may be inserted between the leaves of a bound book without disturbing or removing the leaves of the book by simply folding the edges of the paster-strip to lie against the outsides of the signature and causing the adhesive surface to adhere to the respective leaves between which the supplement is placed, or a single leaf of the original book may be cut off so as to leave a stub, and the separate paster-strip to each folded pair of leaves for the purpose of forming stubs whereby the leaves may be attached in temporary binders; I am aware that pasterstrips have been pasted to the edges of a plurality of sheets of music, and the pastelstrips then tied together along the line of fold so as to bind the music into a pamphlet or signature, but the invention herein described and claimed is, so far as I am aware, novel.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a book, of a supplemental signature therefor, consisting of a plurality of leaves, a paster-strip secured intermediate its edge to extend along the rear edge of said signature and permanently fas- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
