PASS- BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,170, dated October 1?, 1899- Application filed February 28, 1899. Serial No. 707,144. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs P. MARTIN, Jr. a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pass-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to small books used by customers for the entries of credits and charges by banks or other institutions with whom the customers do business; and the object is to attach to the books in several ways a suitable piece of material on which the names of the individual owners may be easily written.
The pass-books generally in use are made of leather, and it is difiicult to write names on them, and after the names are written thereon they will soon wear or be rubbed off. This invention is to remedy this defect.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and two pieces of cardboard m, a piece of leather 72, covering the entire outside and turning partly on the inside of the cardboard, as shown at h, and a lining g, which laps on the edges of the covering a at h.
Fig. 5 shows a book P having a card R attached to the outside of the leather. back of the book and extending under the open edge of the book.
In manufacturing books such as are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the cards on which the names are to be written are attached to the cardboard m and then the leather covering is pasted on the card and the cardboard, enough of the leather covering being cut away to expose enough of the cards on which to write or print the names. The lining g is then put on. The covers are then attached to the book. In this way the cards are securely attached to the cases of the books and, being under the leather, cannot fall out or be torn by wear.
more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application.
Figure 1 is a view of the front cover of a pass-book, showing a card on which names are to be written. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 illustrate variations in the manner of attaching the card. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 on the line 00 00 on a larger scale.
In Fig. 1 a book A has a card B of substantial smooth strong paper or cardboard embedded iu the case of the book, the limit of the card being shown by dotted lines. In Fig. 2 a book D has a card E of similar material embedded in the case of the book and differing from the preceding card in that card E extends on the inside of the cover to the dotted line F.
Fig. 3 shows a book G having a card H of similar material to the card B attached to the outside of the leather cover.
Fig. 5 shows a book K having a card L attached thereto, the case of the book being opened out on both sides. The card L extends entirely across the case, and the ends of the card are extended on the inside of the case or covers to the dotted lines o c. This card may be pasted or sewed or otherwise attached to the book.
Fig. 6 illustrates the construction of the Various changes can be made in the construction of my invention without departing from the purpose set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pass-book provided with a case consisting of cardboards, one for each side of the book, a card attached to the cardboard for the front side of the book, aleather covering attached to said cardboards and to said card, the edges of the leather being lappedunder the front edges of the cardboards, and a lining attached to the inside of said cardboards and to said covering between the back edges of said cardboards and to the laps of said covering, enough of said covering being cut away to expose space on said card for writing a name.
2. A pass-book having a leather-covered case and a card attached to said leather, said card being attached to the front cover and extending under the edge thereof.
In testimony whereof I set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of February, 1899.
THOMAS P. MARTIN, JR.
Witnesses:
